Slumdog Millionaire is really a movie that made me proud.

It is not often that movies made in India are given this wide acclaim by western audiences. It was really touching to see a part of life that many of us often take for granted, and sometimes we need a good dose of reality." Slumdog Millionaire" does exactly that.

Veteran actor Anil Kapoor and the very versatile Irfaan Khan were superb in their roles and show that Indian actors do have what it takes to star in foreign films. I made a comment to my friends that more people should look at the performances of Anil Kapoor and Irfaan Khan. It was high class acting.

As an Indian- movie lover, it was a proud moment to see this acceptance because often times Bollywood films are criticised for their song- and dance type of movies. I believe that everyone should share in the movie’s success.

I was disappointed that veteran actor Amitabh Bachan publicly down talked the movie and accused it of portraying a negative and outdated side of India. Who is he kidding? Every country in the world has some sides to it that are negative and it does not wish to see, but still that is reality. Life is not always about happy endings and rich and famous people in situations like a fairy tale.

I remember the novel by Dominique Lapierre “ The City of Joy” which was lat er made into a film start ing Indian actors Om Puri and Shabana Azmi and American actor Patrick Swayze. The novel talked about the life of a rural farmer who moved to Calcutta with this family to seek betterment and ends up facing life in the slums.Lapierre who travelled to India depicts in his book the grim life in a typical Indian slum.He wrote, through this novel, about the poverty, famine, underworld and exploitative politics of the 1980s. I don’t recall criticisms about this novel be cause it was reality.

But after watching " Slumdog Millionaire" and reminiscing on the content of “ The City of Joy” I was forced to conclude that not much has changed. And maybe that is what critics can’t handle.

Even if Slumdog Millionaire does not depict a real life, eight Oscar awards simply mean that the film MANAGED to animate and enliven a fictitious story.

As a South African, I find the Indian movies enjoyable, the stories profound, screen writing amazing but I usually skip the long dancing and singing routines because I find them, while too long.. My thoughts on future Indian movies that will make the grade in terms of Oscar material would mean"less dancing" and more "acting", the reason why I say this is the criteria that Western audiences judges a movie's success is not based on the "dancing parts but on the acting parts". If you have good actors and actresses an a fantastic storyline your movie will be a success. The question is does Indian movies want to go "BIG" in the States as the judgement criteria will be far different namely "high class acting" not dancing.

its so late to comment still i would like to add one important thing that slumdog millionnaire was a satirical film which penetrated to every citizen and became a wakeup call. And Amitabh and his family should realise that films like Kabhi khushi kabhi gham is far away from 90% of indians as you are...overrated super heroes.

The reality of Slumdog Millionare:

1. Free education for the kids.
2. Maharashtra Govt. to provide housing for 2 of the kids.
3. The Congress party to use the kids in their election campaign.

"Amrit ki varsha hogee,
Har manav ur ambar se,
Prem sudha karuna barsenge,
Dharti ke kan-kan se,
Jeevan van ke saghan kunj me,
Chetan deep jalenga,
Har sukhee dali par sathee,
Sunder phool khilega."

This will happen for a lucky and privilaged few. For the brimming millions things will remain more or less the same.

Yes, this film made a history. I want to add that the time has come when we have to do some ground work for the betterment of the people who did not get equal opportunities till date.
