SOA IMPLEMENTATION - KEY THINGS TO BE KEPT IN MIND
| S.no | Objective | Details |
| 1 | Prevent Duplication of Services . Ensure Active Application Management | SOA needs active management of the collection of services (Service Catalogue) in order to prevent duplication of services during implementation of new functionality. Application Managment must be prepared for this task |
| 2 | Ensure familiarity of Service Concept with all Stake holders to prevent bad decisions | All stakeholders (Business, Application Managers, Architects, Developers) must be completely aware of the service concept. Any misunderstanding within the stakeholders may lead to bad decisions. When a Business is not clear on service concept ie a service built on one system could be reused in another system if the need and capability matches, there is a possibility of duplication/re building same service in different systems. When a Traditionally educated designer only knows about object orientation, there is a danger that he will make the service too tightly coupled to that actual function |
| 3 | Granularity of service - Finalization during Design | The Granularity of service ie, How much functionality it should cover should be resolved during the Design not at earlier stages as the discussions would become unmanageable and meaningless if the discussions are not related to actual analysis of functions |
| 4 | Ensure Business Model Layer is accessed from Service Layer and not directly from presentation Layer - Avoid Shortcuts | It should be a rule that the Business Model Layer should be accessed via Service Layer not directly from the presentation layer. It would be tempting for developers to call business class operators directly from presentation layer especially when system is still isolated and not yet connected to other application or presentation layers , service layers seems redundant and also due to strict project deadlines. Such shortcuts will have a disastrous effects on time to market for future developments |
| 5 | Ensure workflow related functions are outside service layer | All workflow related functions should be kept out of the service layer. When the order of a series of functions depend on external knowledge that is not available in the system , It is advisable to put its control in a separate work flow layer |
| 6 | Use of tools that force consistency between UML Models is recommended | Use of tools that force consistency between UML Models is recommended |
An excellent thought in terms of layering and the standards which needs to be essentially followed when crafting a SOA approach
