Where we are at where we are going through the eyes of Evolutionary Psychology

My network partners, Sudhir Tafldar wrote a few days ago that Indian bureaucracy is one of the worst as per some survey conducted by some NGO. Gargi Sinha a few days prior wrote a eulogy on Generation—Y,  which are all not good signs for a society evolving in time towards more prescience.

India through ages is considered as originators of consciousness, we fumbled post independence due to lack of interest in further understanding of life and progress in general.  Why we live in poverty the masses I mean, why we don’t have efficient infrastructure, why citizen face more risk than those of other countries etcetera, etcetera.

Natural selection the process through which nature controls human and animal species had been identified as the cause for human malady.  If one identifies a human and study him carefully his behavior towards fellow humans we see that his actions and behaviors are governed by basically 4 fundamental processes. 1)A person growing up need to create a family. So one, family selection becomes his sole purpose. He tend to choose some one who can maintain and further his gene structure, and he tend to choose and appropriate spouse who is socially and physically viable to meet this objective.

3)Then he is faced with the problem of Kin selection where by he is selfish in his attitude to choose his kin as those who can replicate his genes. 3) We through natural selection tend to help those who reciprocate our actions. We choose friends whose  individual mistakes we would like to forgive and thus join in creating collective mistakes in our actions and behavior. This process of kin selection is called ‘reciprocal altruism. 4) important process that govern our behavior through natural selection is ‘status hierarchy’, where by we tend to be more lenient towards those who are more stronger than ourselves and strict on those who are weak.

Now I have created the ground work for further analysis of our social, economic and work vows, which is detrimental in building a just and progressive regime.

Thomas Huxley directed as during his days that natural selection the selfish process though which nature guides and builds human race, one need to identify the enemy and fight it or neutralize its affects on human race, which he directed us to be Biological in nature. His directives were solved by future generations  into processes that are ‘moral’ in nature. The enemy was identifies as 1) Moral ignorance 2) selfishness and 3)vices.

The solutions were 1) if you find someone who is indignant towards morality discount 50% of the effects as due to prejudice or bias crept into him. 2) if you find someone indifferent towards moral life, consider it as due to suffering and 3) make life more easy for those who are poor than those who are in higher levels of social predominance.

Ultimately changing citizen to moral animals is the solution, where the actual solution is helping ones fellow citizen avoiding natural selection roots and helping without expecting reciprocal favor from him or her and to never to let anyone know of your benevolence.  This concurs with JS Mills ‘Utilitarianism’ of maximizing happiness for individuals because unhappiness is detestable.

The process of ‘free will ‘ come into play in our daily life in which Darwin believed though we are all evolved in time our thoughts are divinely created. Ambivalence though is a psychic malady, is prevented in effects by our moral attitude towards fellow humans bifurcating and analyzing the influence of natural selection and avoiding it for collective good.

Hopefully our government will allocate more resources in this direction of spreading  Evolutionary Psychological solutions to alleviate citizens problems and spread the new science with more vigor in our academic fraternity

Mathew, i appreciate the sincerity and virtuous element of honesty within you that is instrumental in your pondering upon the role of evolutionary psychology of mankind for overcoming daunting challenges of our social and economic problems.

Besides the eternal insecurities about losing out on eternal necessities such as food, cloth and accommodation, pragmatically speaking, in the today world of cut throat competition there also exists insecurity on maintaining and improving upon ones social and economic status. And, there are also insecurities that are uncontrollable or partially controllable, say earth quakes, accidents, tremors, other natural disasters or terrorist attacks etc, etc.

When you analyze objectively and get to main reasons for progress in most of the materialistically developed countries are manifold. Firstly, they have understood that work is worship and no work is small and no job is demeaning. There are relatively very less instances of social, creed and religious discrimination. In most developed countries there is hardly any distinction among the people on basis of caste. People are aware not only about their rights but also sincere about their responsibilities. Legal systems are well placed and laws of these lands are robust and uniform. Political system is more stable and political leadership is responsible plus accountable for every aspect of governance. In most of the developed countries, the co-operation, coordination and collaboration among people are order of the day. They have realized that united they stand, divided they fall. Value as well as quality of life is better understood in the developed countries. They have the necessary competitive spirit and therefore they toil in order to maintain their up status in the world. They are keen to innovate, invent and discover in order to improve upon their life styles. In most developed countries, there is a mandatory health insurance and the governing authority is responsible not only for providing education for all but also creating adequate job opportunities. Moreover, eventually people there are also showing interest in the spiritual aspect of their being and making an effort to rise above their materialistic aspirations and thereby maintain an adequate balance by way of involving themselves in charities, social causes as well at times following eastern spiritual way of life such as practicing Yoga, meditation etc, etc.

Thanks Vipin, thanks Akshaya. I hav to say from my experienc that it is not dificult to implemet this, since developed nations already has implemented this and many more of such scientific breakthrouhs, the reason why they are developed.
Akshaya, in your comment, there is something about peoples desire for modern products and services, which exactly is what natural selection is all about. Craving for things that inflate the status equation in the consumer which is none other than evolutionary selfishness imbued in each individual. Insccurity from what ? not being able to feed oneself or clothe oneself, which I feel emerge from anxiety, I suppose. For the paat 100 years countries got developed by educating masses to the breakthroughs in science creating processes that incorporate thes breakthroughs in forms implementable and in the bargain creating more conscious and responsible citizen which is a necessary factor for furthering common good.
I agree with your comments on scriptures and 'sadwaiga kudumbugam" concept and also 'sanathana dharma', which I have to say is the direction prescribed by Darvin et al after seeing the consequences of evolutionary trap every human is bound up with which is repressed selfishness and self deception per se.

Interesting post. It is easier said than done. All social equations that any human being is said to pine for are strictly based on ever prevailing sense of insecurity and the dictum “Survival of the fittest”. Basic behavior patterns among people have not shown any drastic modifications over the ages. Moreover, with the advancement of technology and buzz that marketing of new products and services creates, the needs and desires of human being continue to augment by leaps and bounds. Therefore, this seems unlikely that solution to India’s social and economic problems would emerge from a slow simmering evolutionary process. It would need several drastic steps where society needs to take up cudgels to mitigate if not obliterate the prevailing sense of insecurity in a human mindset specifically for the controllable factors. It would need serious and sincere efforts from the governing authorities to make appropriate policies aiming at developing infrastructure and creating more opportunities for jobs or entrepreneurship. Last but not the least, getting mankind acquainted and acquiesced to the golden teachings from various religious scriptures and sayings of great visionaries such as one from Vedas that says “All World is a family” is also a good beginning to kindle a psychological change in mankind self centered perceptions.
