Sony is yet again ready to layoff 10,000 employees. It is not clear if this will be from Japan or overseas.

This makes us think that how unpredictable can working in big brands be. We normally think that we should go for a big brand instead of working for a small company but when incidents like this happen they tear away our dreams, make us rethink and take away our sleep. If a company is going to lay off so many people where would they go, what would they do and how will they move forward. We have no answer to these questions.

According to Nikkei‘s sources, Sony might also request that its seven executive directors — including Stringer — return their yearly bonuses.

Sony hasn’t officially confirmed the report, but Hirai is set to brief the company’s business plan on Thursday, March 12.

If you go through history this is what has always happened everywhere in the world in Capitalist dominated economies. To safeguard the employees' interest our PM Shri Jawahar Lal Nehru set up major industries in the Public sector and Labour laws were framed to protect the employees. It is an irony of fate that the majority of people who worked there adopted a couldn't care less attitude and brought down the major employment centres. The result was that whilst the Public Sector contributed to the development, welfare and growth of its employees the latter were responsible for closing down the opportunities for their own children. Now these youngsters struggle day and night in privately owned businesses with no job security or assured future. Liberalization was a double edged weapon but had to be resorted to because of the inefficiency of the Public Sector in India. The present state of affairs shows that Prime Minister Nehru's vision of a socialistic pattern of society was best suited for the country. The upward trend in crime and corruption will create conditions favourable for Communism. The Leftist extremists will have an upper hand while the average middle class will continue to suffer. India has tasted various forms of Government from Monarchy to democracy but not a communist form. Maybe that is now on the horizon.

Gargi it's not about big or small brand rather it's about hw things r moving....in terms of business, profitability, market share, cost etc...most importantly the way forward planning and clear cut strategy for the same. We still beleive big brands hv better vision for future. If Sony is planning 2 lay off 10k employee that means there is something wrong grossly. Given in a choice we still prefer better brand name, so it's btr 2 face the situation rather than drawing any conclusion.

No wonder. When recession / economic crunch comes, no exception to it. Everybody is same. Be it a giant like Japan or small like Greece. It's so true , particularly, when Japan reeled over by recent havoc by Tsunami. Products finds meagre buyers in the market due poor economical market. Net results is either lesser production or reduced prices or cut down man-power to maintain the status quo.

I agree with that sony lay off but this decision is demand of that country due to u know that global recession is contine yet after end of the year 2008 and Japan has seen very temendous history in this early decade due to Japan is also suffering with natural calamities such as nuclear power radiantion, flood, twister. So that how can we expect that sony shoul'nt layoff it should be done very earliear in 2010 when these types of problems seen, but sony also didn't lay off then and u know that global recession cloud is also not vanish yet so that how can gi ve good remuneration/salary to their employee without change of circumstances not only global but also in their own country

@Gargi,Sony may be right on its own footing. Every sane individual knows where world economy is heading and it goes without saying that impact on private companies is really huge because their IF reserves already been dried up and shares tanked to a nadir. Layoffs are seriously pricking but boon of globalization and glamor of private job is coupled with eerie shadow of bane of layoffs! It is regretted but let us witness more scenario in upcoming months. I am not a pessimist but a simple observer of economy and trends and yes i am a bit frightened too as i work in IT sector ;)

Sometimes you have to expect this type of downsizing with big corporations. It's unfortunate for the workers but working for them can sometimes be unpredictable.

Hiring and firing is very much a part of the MNC. These companies only wants to make profits. When they feel the going is rough they try to cut cost to remain in the market. One of the tool of cost cutting is to reduce salaries/wages, for this they have to cut man power. This policy of companies like Sony is know to on and all. So accept it and get going.

Very sad news, if this happens it can be demotivating factor for most of the people/youth. Though many can cope but it can leave a very bad effect on the minds of most of the employees.

Thanks,Gargi for referral and for broaching a very sensitive subject. The capital formation bases its origin on profit and losss account. The market forces decide the fortune of private enterprises. You can say supply and demand.I do not think Sony can lay off a such a large force of trained skilled set. The under-current appears to be helping the staff to appreciate a little bit of adjustment.

If you are skilled and competent, you really don't need to think about like what would happen now.

I agree with Mr. Bhushan that it is really not about small or big companies. It depends on so many other factor like financial conditions, employees competency, their roles and responsibilities, etc. So don't you always blame companies. If you're skilled enough you don't need to worry at all

It does not matter company having a big brand or small one.It is a very common thinking about retrenchment on the basis of recession however it is really very unpredictable near about 10,000 employee. My only concern in this is SONY must address the valid reasons of layoff. As far as question regarding "where they would go" it is really not having a proper answer, but I can say good people definitely get a similar kind of job in some other company which deals in electronic goods. Accordingly they can move forward on the basis of their past learning and experience with SONY.
let us see the last Quarter/year ending results of SONY.What they have planned for future business and future course of action about layoff.

Thank you!!

See, this can happen anywhere in a depressed economy. Even to smaller companies. At least if you are retrenched from a bigger brand name, you still have the power of that brand name in your resume to hunt for a job further. Imagine what would happen if its a smaller unknown company and still u got retrenched ?

Very simple.
First thing: stop whining and complaining.
A business that does not do well, will not be able to retain employees. Like it or not, that's the way things are.

Keep your skills sharp, qualifications up-to-date, experience in line with the direction you wish to take your career, and a vigilant eye on the market - and you will be picked up by another company just as good.

Good people are always difficult to get - so be one.
Do not get emotionally attached to your company - that works only for your country, flag and national anthem - not your business; and sell to the highest bidder who takes you in the direction you wish to go to.

The motherhood statements, dreams and fairy tales come later.
Much, much later.

As a beginner and less knowledge about the so called "job world practical life"..i feel let us look into the history of companies like sony , a no-doubt one of the best of the world...what do they have...their histories have actually created histories...which talks of their level of dedication for work , level of innovation..let us not peek into type of work..a work is a work...and a great work is not only great work but also stress, courage, strength, persiverence...and those big words....so when a company finds that in some way or the other these big words are not getting defined in their organisation, they opt for minimalising investment and maximizing efforts..which obviously caters to cutting down jobs or something like that. Now i know saying all these is as easy as thinking about it but doing it...but individuals who have really tried hard in organisations like that and fall under the criteria of being cut-off...i feel however big, good, better, worse a company be ...a company is a business afterall and a business will flourish only when the owner invests right, takes strong efforts and sells at the right time and location and to the right people...again lets not confuse between job and company...as one of my favourite quotes "Love your job not your company" has a lot of hidden meaning. I could relate a lot of this to be a preliminary effort of streamlining a company's performance as a global leader, else a downfall is innevitable. On a smaller scale we keep doing that in our life when we must have faced an academic examination...all stray activities are cutoff even if they were of some ultimate meaning to our life on a tension free day.
