How heavy is this glass of water?

A lecturer, when explaining stress management to an audience, raised a glass of water and asked,
"how heavy is this glass of water?" Answers called out ranged from 20g to 500g.

The lecturer replied, "The absolute weight doesn't matter. It depends on how long you try to hold it."
"If I hold it for a minute, that's not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I'll have an ache in my right arm.
If I hold it for a day, you'll have to call an ambulance.

In each case, it's the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes."

He continued, "And that's the way it is with stress management.

If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later,
as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won't be able to carry on.

As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we're refreshed, we can carry on with the burden."

"So, before you return home tonight, put the burden of work down.  Don't carry it home. You can pick it up tomorrow. Whatever burdens you're carrying now, let them down for a moment if you can."
"Relax; pick them up later after you've rested."

"Life is short. Enjoy it!"

Hi Makarand, It is not that u should not take phone calls of your colleague or phone calls related to the job. Even it doesnt matter if you take the work along with you at home. The only point is that dont take the stress along with the work. Dont make yourself too stressful, dont scribble at home regarding the office pressure, etc. Ultimately it depends on individual basis how a person balances everything...........everyone has their own defination of stress...........

Hi Sangeeta,

Precisely my point too. With responsibility comes the need to achieve and with achievement comes the need to keep doing that over and over again. Stress is a parcel that comes as a gift once you start orembark on the path of success. You carry stress as a gift. How can you avoid a situation when your boss suddenly calls to talk to you about that presentation that you had made and need to make? Its unavoidable not to carry stress with you.

How can you avoid stress?? If you deliberate on not taking work at home it will inadvertently follow you. You may switch off your cell phone, but if it is maintained by your employers, you may be asked a question by your HR!! I would suggest that work and its related issues are never out of your mind whether you like it or not. You need to detach yourself, engage into an activity that will lift your spirits like reading, drawing or even a long drive!! Your cell phone needs to be with you and even of you receive a work related call during your process of detachment, please take it, you will be surprised how well you have been able to handle it!! A HAPPY mind can be a fantastic state to be in!! I would not like to curl up thinking about how many calls I have missed and start a new day with the balance of yesterday hanging on my shoulders!!

Yes Sangeeta you are absolutely right, one should never carry office stress to home. Rather they should avoid this...

People tend to Smoke and drink alcohol to avoid stress, to calm them down.
Don't be fooled that smoking and drinking can help with stress. In the long run, they don't. Drinking alcohol to 'calm nerves' is often a slippery slope to heavier and problem drinking.

Best way to avoid stress is by mediation, taking up hobbies which has no deadlines, no pressures, and which can be picked up or left easily, regular regular exercise etc..
