Dear All:

I am planning to set up an NGO shortly, with the following objectives:

(a) promote social and economic upliftment of people in any rural/backward areas (b) providing education to the poor and economically backward communities (c) undertake programs to provide food, shelter and basic healthcare to senior citizens (d) undertake programs for the welfare and empowerment of women and help them acquire necessary skills (e) undertake activities in the areas of healthcare (f) undertake programs for renovation of dilapidated temples.

Can anybody suggest a Good and Catchy name either in English or in Sanskrit. I was thinking of Young & Elderly Foundation but thought of seeking the opinion of my friends on Too Step.

Please do suggest a Good and Catchy name ...

dear murthy sir, i saw this a few days ago. i guess a lot may have happened since you initiated this and with the enthusiastic participatin of so many of our well meaning toosteppers. i must congratulate them all for setting such an excellent example. every comment and contribution enriches us all.
i had read about an org known as "letzdream". i thought they may be a useful and helpful resourse. what i know is this - letzdream foundation, LDF is a non-profit organization that supports civil social organizations in India and provides fund assistance towards resource development and capacity enhancement.
The organization has a website www.letzchange.org which is an interactive platform that connects networks of donors, non-profits and socially responsible individuals from across the world. i believe they provide databases to donors and socially sensitive individuals to help them make informed decisions. they provide tools to nonprofits for promoting their activities by using pre-existing social networks. The website is based on web 2.0 technology.
i do hope this helps. do say if i can be of use in any manner. with respects.

Considering that you are talking about activities which will benefit humanity... 'Lokakshema' or 'LOKMA' could be an option.
Srinivas Ji, In continuation of my post... I got an answer from Muralidharan Ji's comments. An answer I have been searching for many years.. Let me implement my thoughts in the first place.. wait and see..

Dear Srinivas Ji, I am just thinking of making the young semi-educated people stand on their own feet, while helping the aged and infirm. You call it self sustainability, social entrepreneurship or empowerment. Whatever we call, the goal is the same (Like the Almighty). I am overwhelmed by the support of Too Step friends (See the concluding remarks of Shameena Ji). There is no question of "Sorry" between you and me. I need your guidance and moral support. Thank You.

Murty Sir, first of all let me say sorry to you. I failed to notice this till date, as I was busy otherwise.

Most of the NGOs are being floated and working with an eye to receive funds from different quarters. So these NGOs are loosing their sheen as Mr. Muralidharan observed. In this scenario, your NGO may be different from all other odds, people may not differentiate it.

As Mr. Muralidharn said, Social entrepreneurship is not taken up as required in India till date. One of the best example for Social entrepreneur is "AMUL". However, for reasons unknown, it failed to stimulate others to follow the path.

Philanthropic acts extends a helping hand to the needy. It is a short-term gain for the people at the receiving end and provides no answer for their problems in the long run.

Whereas Social entrepreneurship assures the self-reliance. This is the need of the hour. Am I lecturing on the subject? Sorry for it sir.

Suggested names

"Swayam Krushi"
Organisation for "Strengthening the shaky hands"

Sir, I wish you all the best, and I am sure being an accomplished professional you will succeed. I work with an int'l NGO in Cambodia, and wrk on some consulting assignments as well. Please remain in touch with me at capt_uday@yahoo.co.in, hopefully I will be able to provide some constructive inputs.
One suggestion here Sir, please focus on just a few specific areas to start with, you can broad base it later on. Just as a company would find it difficult to be in electronics, FMCG, IT, power, etc and be good at them, so also, working in each of these areas that you have mentioned requires particular capacities and approach. There are of course business houses present in more than a 100 different businesses, but then they are structured accordingly. I would have liked to suggest a name, but am refraining from doing so at this stage, because some kind of a thought process is required, based on your strategies etc, before deciding on one. Also, NGOs these days, at least the consistently successful and sustainable ones are run as professionally as companies, therefore would request more inputs and interactions before giving further suggestions. It has been a pleasure reading something constructive on this site after a long time!

Murthy sir, I welcome your initiative! A few suggestions:-

Think of Social entrepreneurship(SE), instead of not-for-profit. In India SE is making greater strides towards inclusiveness by involving every strata of society to tap into the momentum and growth of the country.
But there is a catch out here! In spite of several initiatives, social entrepreneurship ecosystem in India is not coming together as well as it needs to. Their focus and collaboration on solutions should be directed towards not merely one-off acts of charity, but adding up to a vast array of sustainable services across sectors and industries that help people at the base of the pyramid, which is not happening in the country now.

Sir, definition of social entrepreneurship has changed over time from corporate philanthropy to non-profit and now to self-sustainability.

Don't create yet another NGO, the very nomenclature is losing its sheen after the Anna moment. You fund an initiative or take funds for an initiative, not as a charity, but as a long-term debt with flexible term and gestation period, so that the stakeholders would work for tangible outcome.

As far as the name goes, here are my suggestions:

1) Action for Social Transformation (AST)
2) Centre for Yogakshemam (CFY)
3) Like-minded Initiative For Empowerment (LIFE)
