Switching off for Earth Hour

Come March 28, all 123 Starbucks stores across Malaysia will switch off its non-essential lights from 8.30pm to 9.30pm to mark Earth Hour.

"We’re turning off our back-of-the-house and lobby lights, for one hour in an effort to raise awareness for a worldwide energy conservation effort," said Sydney Quays, director of marketing & communications, Berjaya Starbucks Coffee Company Sdn Bhd.

To ensure that its dine-in customers are rewarded for joining in the event, Starbucks is offering a one-hour only 20% discount on all purchases made during Earth Hour at any Starbucks store.

"The environment is everyone’s responsibility. Starbucks’ commitment is to do business in ways that are both good to the earth and to each other. Our second year of participation in Earth Hour is just one of the planned efforts to the reduction of water and energy we consume at the stores," added Quays.

"As our stores are spread nationwide, we hope to help raise the awareness on climate change," he said.

Quays added that the company will, in the next couple of months, reveal its global corporate responsibility programme which aims to put definite goals to actions to ensure that coffee is sourced ethically, positive impact on the environment is minimised and active community involvement is at the heart of everyone at Starbucks.

"We are also pleased to announce that 50 Starbucks partners (employees) will be participating in the ‘Walk of Hope’ organised by CapSquare in conjunction with Earth Hour," he said.

Other than the walk, Starbucks will be participating in the Eco Bazaar to promote Starbucks reusable tumblers at a special 50% discount while giving away used coffee grounds which can be used as fertilisers.

Berjaya Starbucks Coffee Company Sdn Bhd is jointly owned by Starbucks Coffee International and Berjaya Group Berhad.

The company operates Starbucks retail locations throughout Malaysia and is committed to offering the world’s finest coffee while enriching Malaysians’ lives one cup at a time.
