It may be good old drama season back for some major politicians from Tamil Nadu. However, this time over it seems that the general public is very much keen on getting to the roots of one of the most infamous scams that the nation have ever witnessed - the 2G spectrum scam.
The drama theatre of Tamil Nadu politics has already got heated up with the latest news packing some sort of sensation being the 'shocking' decision by the DMK to pull out from the Congress-led UPA government at the centre, citing the 'admant' stance of the Congress marked by the avarice of demanding 63 seats in the alliance for the assembly polls that is scheduled to take place next month.
It was given in a recent interview by Cho Ramswamy, a popular columnist, lawyer, playright and comedian in Tamil Nadu that this could be a ploy by the DMK thinktank, designed in a bid to coming up with a reasonable argument before the public, when the CBI sleuths call on Kanimozhi, the daughter of K Karunanidhi and DMK MP, for a condign interrogation as part of the 2G spectrum scam probe.
However, many an expert in the context from Tamil Nadu avers that there is seldom scope for any such effort from the part of the DMK to confute allegations related to the 2G scam at this point of time. This according to them is mainly because a good part of the public have already alerted their minds against any sort of potential attempts to misguide them in the cotext.
The Tamil Nadu public had always - from the day cries to investigate the 2G scam and the part played by the DMK leadership in it had started airing - wanted to get the right information on the scam from the right beginning; although this has been intensified by the recent arrest of the former telecoms minister and DMK politician A Raja, the outing of the news that the management of Kalaignar TV run by a couple of Karunanidhi family members had accepted Rs 200 crores from a dubious company that has been under the microscope for its part in the scam, and the rumours rife that Kanimozhi was the next in line to face an arrest.
With the future so dim for the DMK, which is not only nursing some injuries caused by the hostile attitude of a prominent son of the mighty octagenarian, M K Azhagiri towards the scion apparent, MK Stalin, but also fearing another eruption of the kind any time, it is very much looking towards a sealing win in the forthcoming TN assembly elections, which they think would stand to exculpate them to a great extent.
Nevertheles, the irony here is that with no many DMK activists of the lower ranks having enjoyed the fruits of the alleged scam, if someone from the party might really have appropriated something, the onus for vindicating themselves from the humiliation will fall exclusively on the leaders of the party. This, if transpired, is likely to cause a rift between the top and bottom structures of the DMK party, which would be gleefully accepted by the AIADMK led by J Jayalalitha, the nemesis of the 'K family'.
The limelight today is very much on the Congress, which if leashes some of its over-aspiring politicians in the state that have been always looking to tying the party in the DMK stables, and searches for greener pastures, was likely to end up reaping richer dividents than it used to, in more than one way. This is also what the unbiased millions of the nation are watching with both curiosity and optimism - can the adventurer shrug off the 'Old Man of the Sea' and lead his vessel to the much sought after destination of being one of the developed folks of the planet?
