Team India’s latest controversy; Club for money or Country for pride

  1. The decision of some of the senior players to skip the upcoming West Indies tour has given birth to a new controversy, Club for money or Country for pride. The issue is refusing to bury, with every passing day, it is blowing into a bigger explosion. Media, common man and former greats have plunged into the fire to present their side of the story. More you try to comprehend the issue, it gets murkier the more.

The controversy began after the just concluded 51 day cricket fair of money and glamour, IPL  as some of the senior cricket players decided to skip the West Indies’ tour citing fatigue and demanding well deserved rest after the hectic schedule of the World Cup and IPL. Without reading in between the lines, BCCI gave its consent and decided to send a second string Indian team to WI.

The team composition may well be called as India A as many budding players who are otherwise snubbed have been selected. Likes of Amit Mishra, Rohit Sharma, Manoj Tiwary, Shikhar Dhawan and R Ashwin have made it to the coveted list. Senior players Sachin Tendulkar, Zaheer Khan, Dhoni, Gautam Gambhir, Virendra Sehwag, and Yuvraj Singh have been excluded from the first leg of the WI tour, ODI and Twenty 20.

For the second leg of the tour, Test series, seamer Zaheer and Dhoni will be back in the squad. Yuvraj has been left out of the squad for the entire series. Sachin wanted to skip the entire series, while Gautam and Sehwag are recuperating from the injury.

The development has fuelled a new controversy, club or country, Club for money or Country for pride. Legendary all rounder, Kapil Dev has opined on the controversy.  “It is for the players to decide between the club and country” said the legend.

Senior players have been condemned by media and many former greats. Initially it was Gambhir who was supposed to lead the men in blue; however, he picked up shoulder injury during the IPL and was left out to nurse the injury. As huge money is floating in IPL, none of the senior player skipped it and asked for rest. Now, for WI tour they want rest. Are these players preferring money over country or club over pride? If seniors wanted rest, they would have skipped the IPL. But it wasn’t the case, the hazy screen is crystal clear now, money matters most for these players but national pride.

Here is the team India for WI tour:

ODI, T20 Team: Suresh Raina (capt), R Ashwin, S Badrinath, Harbhajan Singh (vice-captain), Virat Kohli, Praveen Kumar, Amit Mishra, Munaf Patel, Parthiv Patel (wk), Yusuf Pathan, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Ishant Sharma, Rohit Sharma, Vinay Kumar, Manoj Tiwary, Shikhar Dhawan.

Test Team: M S Dhoni (capt), V V S Laxman (vice-captain), M Vijay, Abhinav Mukund, Rahul Dravid, Virat Kohli, Subramaniam Badrinath, Harbhajan Singh, Ishant Sharma, S Sreesanth, Amit Mishra, Pragyan Ojha, Zaheer Khan, Munaf Patel, Suresh Raina, Parthiv Patel (wk).

  1. With all due respect to Zaheer Khan, Dhoni, Gautam Gambhir, Virendra Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh and legendary Sachin Tendulakar, I would like to say, you can’t sail in two boats concurrently. Stop emotionally blackmailing crazy fans that you love playing for the nation, stop flaunting you heart for tricolor.

To throw some mud on someone is easy. I have not seen anything wrong in the seniors decisions to skip the West Indies tour. It gives a good opportunity for the young buddies to prove their metal. Who is ready to lose an opportunity to earn more. Since we dont have the opportunity to earn we may talk something against. Its not a correct perspective. After all they are human beings. They have their own problems. West Indies tour is not such an important tour for India. Dont make it a controversy.

Lets not give it a controversial hue. Cmon guys they deserve a break after winning the world cup. Yes, they played in the IPL immediately but who would pass of that kind of money. And the tour of west indies is not such an important one as even our second string side can beat them like they are doing at present.
We shouldnt read too much into it. Lets give them some peace so that they can bounce back even more viciously and continue to entertain us by winning.

I think that for the cricketers to choose legal money over country is a personal choice that no one else should comment upon. We may have stalwarts who not only keep away from representing T20 for India but are delighted to play in IPL, we also may have have them sponsoring everything from cement to soft and surrogate drinks, pens, 2-wheelers and invertors.
It is only when they seek to be considered for non-sports national honours and waivers of customs duties and stuff like that does it become appalling. When a choice is made for money over country, that is the choice that should always prevail. No double standards please!

some players who played in IPL and then after they say that they are tired and due to this they are not in the position to go on west indies tour, is realy very shamefull for them. They all are know very well that after IPL, west Indies tour will arrive. In this condition Why they play in IPL ???? AND WHY THEY WILL NOT RESTED THAT PERIOD TO REBOOST FOR WEST INDIES TOUR??????
At another point If someone think that in the absence of seniors , many juniours and new talented player have to chance to proove himself, then it is good.
BUT ITS NOT HAPPEND LIKE THAT CASE AS HAPPENS NOW AFTER IPL......
its not just to twist the statement when the players played a continuous stressful matches in their IPL.One could postpone the west indies tour as our players are tired out.
No where it is written its only the seniors have to go for the matches
we do have equally a good team of cricketers who could win the matches.
Bringing in this statement as play for country or club is not appropriate at this juncture.once the rest period id over then its is ok to talk about it.
If these players play for money matches that are going to be played for money like IPL series and have intention to skip the west indies tour, then its fair to bring in this point

Himanshu here even if you are in two boats but the boats will never seperate from each other. I am of the opinion the decision makers of BCCI dont even know who are in the team.

They are busy with the chest of BCCI.

After all money has 1et place in our life .without money no one can live peacefully and enjoy the life.Players opted out from Windies tour that does not mean they don't love the nation. On one side you say that the newcomers should get the chance to show their talent,on the other you say the senior players love money than nation.the political leaders get money by hook or crook they don't have to work too hard, now a days its easy for them to gather money.so they speak whatever they like.they put these things in the mind of common man.If these players had not played IPLt20then they would have gone on tour.Ipl was conducted by BCCI i.e.official authority of cricket in India. These players were hired by clubs so they had to play for the club. The main question would have arised when there would have been clashes between the dates of two tournaments, and players opted for IPL then it would have been controversy. Now players are tired and they would not be able to show their original game at that time also you will blame them for not playing good cricket. And what happens when new players were given a chance .It will build new team and the juniors will get International experience. This controversy should not be flourished otherwise players having love for nation will get hurt and they will get retired from game then we will have to rely on juniors.

There is no passion involved in the game. It is all for money. Club Vs country.. no it is Passion Vs Money and in most of the fights money tends to win. It is sad but this is the fact.
