New competition is coming from VIA, Nvidia to name a few. With netbooks gaining popularity speed and raw power is giving way to "adequate" CPU power and energy efficiency.

Chip maker VIA has announced the latest revision of its low-power Nano processor in an attempt to unseat Intel's Atom chip from its position as the de-facto netbook processor. On a pair of popular benchmarks - PCMark 05 and 3DMark2006 - the Nano 3000 scored 43 per cent and 49 per cent higher than Intel's Atom N270.

The most exciting CPU of the bunch is AMD's upcoming hexa-core (6 core) CPU. Codenamed Thuban, it will be a 45nm part, guessed to be clocked at about 2.8GHz.
