When I first heard the news of Pi getting replaced by Tau my heart missed a beat! After all that hard woek at maths, physics and all they tell me that all my efforts are invain because I was using the wrong value!!

But thank God I had a chance to go through this another piece of news.. Pi will be there standing strong without change.

Sometimes this makes me think.. how would it be if my name changed but I remain the same person. How would it make a difference. They could have replaced it with Tau but in the end the area of all the circles will change and this constant change, does it have any meaning?? It will still be the same , wouldn't it be??

I am not aware of Pi & Tau, thanks for the updates Sujatha & thanks for referral.

Thanks for referral Ms. Sujatha Srivastav,
First time here I come to know of this. Thanks for it. I have no idea of Pi & Tau. It seems that, from the comment I came to know that So far we are using a wrong value for Pi. But, we still use 2Pi r & Pi rr for perimeter & area of circle. May be for meticuluous calculation they may thing of Tau. Otherwise the status quo can be continued.

Thanks Sujatha for the referral.
Very much informative article.
Thanks to Mr. Muralidharan too for more light on to this.

Ms. Sujatha, "you heaved a sigh of relief", but the matter has not died down. Deccan Herald published this news items on 28th June, 2011 - the campaign is still on, it seems!

'Pi' to be replaced with 'tau'?
London, Jun 28 (PTI)

The humble ''pi'' may have had its day. Mathematicians are campaigning for the most important number in the world to be replaced with alternate value ''tau''.

They are claiming that the number -- the constant which references the circumference of a circle to its diameter -- is wrong and it should be replaced with tau, the 'Daily Mail' reported.

The mathematicians have said that while 3.14159265, the number's value, is not incorrect, it is the wrong figure to be associated with the properties of a circle as a matter of course. Tau has a value twice that of pi of 6.28.

"For all these years, we have been looking at the wrong number when we have been looking at pi. Pi simply isn't the most natural number that we should associate with a circle. The proper number is 2pi, or tau," Kevin Houston at the University of Leeds told 'The Times' newspaper.

The number has long been seen as being essential to many mathematical formulae as well as being vital to equations in science and engineering.

It is used when calculating the circumference of a circle by multiplying the diameter by the value of pi, while its area can be deduced by multiplying pi by the square of its radius.

However, mathematicians campaigning for its replacement argue that since so many formulae require the use of tau that may be used as the main circle constant instead.
"Mathematicians don't measure angles in degrees, we measure them in radians, and there are 2pi radians in a circle. That leads to all sorts of unnecessary confusion. If you take a quarter of a circle, it has a quarter of 2pi radians, or half pi.

"For the number of radians in three quarters of a circle, you have to think about it. It doesn't come naturally. How much simpler it'd be if we just used tau instead of pi. The circle would have tau radians, a semicircle would have half tau, a quarter of a circle a quarter tau, and so on. You don't have to think," Dr Houston said.

Pi -- taken from the first letter of the Greek word for "perimeter" -- was first given its name in 1706 by mathematician William Jones. Both the Ancient Egyptians and the Babylonians were believed to have known an approximate value of pi, while a version also appears in Bible.

Thanks,Sujatha for referral.pi or tau is symbolic. What i could deduct that human brain has developed so much that more precision mathematical calculations are required and so more decimals. You can continue to use pi,but tau will represent the refinement.
Its not renaming "Pi" as Tau. When you are required to calculate 2pi value, instead of calling it as 2pi, you can call it as Tau. Its not the death of pi, it always there because Tau means 2pi. Unless you know the value of pi, you cant get the 2pi.

Well, if someone is really thinking of changing the notation for a constant that has been known and represented, perhaps for nearly 5000 years, with that letter - Pi, can just think this - we dont have anything better to do, and also it doesnt make anything easier or simpler.. how is this replacement helping? I feel it will just die a natural and quick death - as it deserves.

Whats in a name? Nothing? Cant agree with this. Sometimes the sound of a name produces some vibrations in your heart. If somebody hears Sujatha, it might produce something. And if he hears a different name, lets say Hema, it will produce different vibrations. And it might even define the relationship. Dont believe this? Check it out on the web.
