Why the Anna phenomenon is working?
Anna is no more a man with diminutive physique, moderate education, frail background. Within these seven days, he has become a phenomenon not only across the nation but across geographies.
- The charismatic Anna is now being looked upon as the savior of this great nation, the land of messiah of non-violence, Mahatma Gandhi, the land of legendary saint, Swami Vivekananda, the land of revolutionaries like Subhash and Bhagat Singh. The revolution has been christened as the second August Kranti. The first one took place in the pre-independence era under the leadership of father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi in August 1942 as “Quit India Movement”.
Why our forefathers plunged into struggle for freedom? Why they rose against the racism, slavery of British colonial rule? Why they sacrificed their lives for freedom? We all know the answer, to see our motherland free from the clutches of foreign hand, to ensure food for hungers, jobs for unemployed, no discrimination on the basis of caste, color and creed, upliftment of the deprived classes. Only eight days back, we commemorated 65th Independence Day.
How many of us have done sincere introspection? Have we reached where we wanted to? Is the glitter, celebration around us a mere farce? Yes, this beautiful developing nation has evolved massively since independence. We are a constructive force to reckon with in a wide spectrum of areas.
We take pride in having esteemed name in the world of IT, Infosys, Wipro, TCS, HCL are revered across geographies for their commendable feats. Hyderabad and Bangalore are leading IT hubs across the globe. BPO, KPO, ITES industries are doing great here. Our IT capabilities are second to none in the world. The industry is flourishing well and is one of the most sought after for career. Science and Technology, agriculture, retail, heavy industries, oil and natural gas have also surged ahead. Name any industry, field, and India has its footprints there.
This is only one side of the story; the outcome of the development saga is limited to a certain class. The development has not reached every nook and corner of the country. The rich poor divide has widened over the years. Poverty is still there, malnourishment still persists, hunger deaths are still reported, females are still discriminated on the basis of gender, rape and dowry deaths are common, unemployment surging, farmers still commit suicide.
The crusade against corruption must go on, government must look into the legitimate demands of civil society. The farce democracy must end, those who are plundering wealth of the nation should be put behind bar. Lets hope the spark kindled my septuagenarian, Anna Hazare wakes up deaf and dumb government.
