The End of Anna Hazare?

The chickens are coming home to roost for Anna Hazare, who has abruptly called off his latest protest fast.

The 74-year-old social activist, who emerged as the face of an anti-corruption movement after his first, breathtakingly successful, fast at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi in April, also announced the indefinite postponement of his mass “courting of arrest” scheme and planned sit-ins in front of the residences of Congress bigwigs like Sonia Gandhi.

The most immediate factor was likely the 102 degree temperature he was reportedly running as the result of a chest infection. But the reality is that the crowds had anyway disappeared from his fast venue in Mumbai, as well as a proxy location at Delhi’s Ramlila ground.  Compounding the apparent lack of public interest has been the lack of media coverage, particularly among the electronic media. The dip in interest was also evident from the fact that barely any of the 100,000 mostly young people who had registered themselves for Hazare’s mass “courting arrest” campaigns showed up.

A third factor was that the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government this time didn’t commit the kind of blunders it did last August, when it ordered Hazare’s arrest. This time, the government ensured that the state government of Maharashtra, a coalition government headed by the Congress, gave Hazare and his followers all necessary permissions before the event.

But arguably the biggest problem for Hazare has been overkill. With the Lok Sabha having passed the government’s Lokpal Bill with an oral vote on December 27, much of the public simply didn’t see the point in another fast.  Whether the bill that was passed by the lower house is strong enough is therefore seen as a question for parliament, not something the government is responsible for.

To cap it all, even the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) didn’t allow one of several Lokpal-specific bills that would have bestowed constitutional status to the office of the Lokpal (ombudsman) to pass.

The message for Team Anna, then, should be loud and clear. If the movement wants to have any relevance it needs to find a way to connect on an emotional level with the public, as it managed with the early protests.

Hazare and his associates have said umpteen times that they were campaigning against the Congress to protest against a “weak” Lokpal bill. While they are at perfect liberty to do so in a democracy like India, the crucial question is how they could have so vocally rejected a bill that was yet to be passed by parliament?

You are very right Rajeev ji. Anna has lost his momentum what he had created last time. Mumbai show should have been avoided when the Parliament had taken up the issue for discussion. They should have waited for sessions to get over, before launching any attack on the parliamentarians. It looked as if Shri Anna Hazare is being used as a tool by the team without giving any credence to his health condition. This was a mis-calculated move by the team. To gain public sentiment, they have to take non-partisan approach and their fight should be 'issue-based' and not to portray one 'individual'!

Anna needs Media to Shine, But the reverse is true for Baba Ramdev - Media Need Baba to remain in Limelight, Anna can't manage even Arvind & Kiran, whereas Baba can Manage the whole Mass & Media both. Baba always supported Anna, But Anna never supported Baba Ramdev, Anna is jealous of Baba, Anna likes Camera more than a Mirror, he lives in Virtual World & avoids real life..., Soon we will see him supporting Corrupt Congress...

Anna never enjoyed Muslims support and as soon as He started abusing BJP, all Hindus deserted him, Baba Ramdev is matured, he knows the art of bringing People & Politicians together, he can lead our country better than any Leader.

It shows there is an another group who wanted to thrive upon the term " Corruption" . Basic intention is only to offer "pressure" to the Ruling Govt. & not interested in "Lokpal bill" or " Corruption"& wanted to wear political skin. Made it obvious that, somebodies' incitement, started this movement.

I had visited one of the protesting site which was supporting Annaji’s anti corruption moment. After watching them for nearly 3 hours found people, who say they are the follower's knew nothing about this moment. Collecting donation, collecting money for membership and announcing every where they are fasting for anti corruption moment taking money!!!!!!!!!!.College going students bunking their classes and just after few minutes walking out without participation. Parents will think my child is in college or school and principal of the college will think, yes the young blood of India is participating in the moment........
After watching all these things I only felt one cannot remove this by fasting, one can remove this by educating people from all walks of life. Bringing awareness to act upon............shri Anna hazareji as given us a start, why only he and his team? Even we can be a part of it by contributing and resisting ourselves not to give corruption. Blaming others is very easy. Let’s start from ourselves and family, immediate surroundings. We can really find the roots to remove this corruption. Not by killing Annaji for anti corruption moment.

Shameena ji you have jumped the gun by pronouncing the Anna movement a failure. I will not be surprised if the thick skinned Mrs. Bedi & Kejriwals declare that the result of the BMC polls prove that the people of India are with them in their fight against the most corrupt government in history of mankind. The next day Anna Hazare will reciprocate the same in chaste Maratindi. Unless he is in one of his maun vrat.

Can we sit in judgement?
It is a pity that people for whose cause Anna and others took up the struggle are the one's totally disconnected and unenthused. As individual there was very little or no reason for Annaji or Arvind or anyone else to take up such a cause except betterment for future generations of nation. While the media and most people tend to draw comparatives as if from a seesaw game mostly without even complete understanding.

It is not easy for anyone to come into limelight like Anna did. That was enough of an entry. They should have simply consolidated. But they were carried away. Even today, I wonder why all news channels did not highlight strictures passed by Supreme Court. They invited such strictures since they questioned supremacy of the Constitution and Parliament. While the limelight was a flash in the pan, manner of their disappearance was shocking to say the least. Instead of hiding behind health, Anna Hazare should have simply highlighted lack of consistency amongst his supporters. He should have taken an oath to continue single handedly.
The Government actually was afraid of Anna Hazare. Even as an individual, they were afraid of him. If as an individual he had fought, he could have retained the respect. They Government could have given credence to the individual protest and come forward with proposals. But he simply chickened out....

I agree with Rajeevji. His priority should be to kick out Kiran Bedi and Kejriwal from the group. Others will fall in place. And he has to tell the camera happy followers to stay off the television rooms and concentrate on concrete hard ground work.

He should also re-orient the thrust of movement and steer clear of personal battles and skirmishes. He has to concentrate on mission of working to wake the people from the dangers of corruption. That is his job, and not to replace any elected representative.

But the joke that signifies his movement also is reflected in him, He does not know what his goal is, how to conduct himself. Little wonder the Team Anna turned out to be damn squid.

Shameena Ji, your point about English news is well made. I endorse. As far as Anna is concerned, what a fall from an iconic figure from April 2011 to December 26, 2011 and a headless chicken from December 27, 2011 onwards. His team members only are to be blamed. Anna can bounce back if he throws out his personal coterie of the two Bhushans, Kejriwal and Bedi.

Anna a simple man manipulated by vested interests or over zealous workers? That is a question to be asked. By stepping into the political lines, Anna and his team have erred, but that should not make them a pariah to be avoided as he was done in Mumbai. Losing supporters was a different issue, altogether a logistical one. Had it been made at Wankhede stadium, you could have seen the swelling numbers. But then who cares in Mumbai, every one is busy making good of what they are at. Mumbai was a poor choice, the venue poorer and the positioning poorest. So Anna needs to re-strategize and re-work his resolve. Lokpal or not.

Yes! Tanmay and Srinivas have pointed to the obvious. One of the major factors that messed up the Team Anna campaign was their getting involved in the political game. They must have realized how all their supporting parties proved to the biggest stumbling block in the Lok Sabha for the Lok Pal bill. In-fact the Congress seemed the most sympathetic to their cause.

This is the intrigues of politics and novices in field with massive egos and over riding ambitions will definitely be hit badly. Politics like Stock market can be minefield if one does not know the game.

A good movement was killed brutally. The suicidal acts of team also given ample strength to their opponents. The team Anna drifted away the movement for reasons unknown. In the midst of allegations (Anna team working for the benefit of a particular party) they would have not targeted the Cong. as a party, instead they would have aimed their opposition on the system itself. This was a strategic mistake. A section of media/media people worked well against this movement. Anyway, a good movement seems to have lost its sheen. Pathetic!!!!!

I guess the times of Mahatma was even more tough for an anti-estblishment crusader than today. Yet Gandhiji really always mainted his moral standards and basic honesty. This went a long way for support for India's image as well.

Reference and context are forever important. People who tend to compare Mahatma Gandhi with Anna Hazare do this comparison for the sake of as different times change reference and context which form the reason.
As for the comment "End of....". It is not wise to make guesses unless backed by reason and facts. And even if time proves this is true it is much a loss for democracy in India than the person Anna.

Yes May be. I guess it was too much of something. Its true that we wanted the debate on obvious shortcomings on our system of goverance. Anna started on it but once we debated on it, it was supposed to stand on common grounds. Anna and his team seems adamant on only their point of view. This is stupid as any new system will also have its shortcoming.

Thanks Rajeevji fir this article. It really cuts to the core of the issue. And I ditto the views of Ardhedu Pal. But I do differ as to when Anna began to loose credibility. It started with his comparison with the Mahatma, by nautanki's like Mrs. Bedi and Kejrival.

Unfortunately this brought into public domain the comparison of Anna and Gandhiji. Anna did not measure anywhere near Bapu in his conduct, his ill-concieved statements, stubborness and constant shifting of positions (an indicator if you might of a layer of dishonesty deep down. Murthy Sir is perfectly right that the Team Anna is the main reason for the mess, though I do think he differs with me on the credibility of Anna. He stills does not see any loss of credibility. And finally to wind up the crowds were never any indicator of the strength of the movement. It was a passing blizzard caused by curosity of the youth incited by a totally over-the-top media and fanttastic social media campaign from the team Anna. Frankly Team Anna had grown too big for its boots.

As per my view Anna lost his credibility as a gandhiwadi by cowardice act of changing the location for physical benefits whereas history depicts entirely different of Mahatma Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi is credited with his fight in adverse and opposite weather conditions wearing a simple 'Suti Dhoti' and a 'Janeu' as attire.
Moreover at that period of history we the Indians were not under democracy and we had the authority to defame the monarch by any means possible, but here the picture is different and we by ourselves are there on ruling side as they were democratically elected by us.
One more factor that resulted in this catastrophically devastated and pityingly unsupported movement may be the confrontation of it's members of core committee with their respective true face.
