The Politics of Fasting

The Anna Hazare time bomb has once again started ticking for the United Progressive Alliance government. The 72-year-old social activist has vowed to resume his fast—this time with a ‘Corruption Bharat Chhodo’ (Corruption, quit India) theme. The centrepiece of Team Anna’s agitation is once again the anti-graft Lokpal Bill. The Hazare camp now wants the government to withdraw its ‘toothless’ bill and replace it with one that civil society members have been gunning for—with the Prime Minister, the judiciary, and members of parliament coming under the ambit of the proposed legislation.

The UPA government has acted like a headless chicken in dealing with civil society. Its response has ranged from abject surrender to a brazen show of power as demonstrated in the Baba Ramdev episode. The government for its part has accused Hazare and Ramdev of acting on behalf of the Bhartiya Janta Party and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. Whether or not this is true, the fact of the matter is that the government has made a mess of governing and its reputation.

Parliament should be the only forum to decide what the Lokpal Bill, or any other bill for that matter, should contain. If the majority view in parliament is that the prime minister, the judiciary, and MPs should come under the Lokpal’s ambit, the government should accept the decision gracefully and toe the line. A statement to this effect by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will send a strong message and take the wind out of Team Anna’s sails.
But instead of watering the roots of the issue, the government is busy watering the leaves. It is engaging itself in a specious debate with Team Anna over whether the venue of their agitation from August 16 should be Jantar Mantar or some other part of Delhi. The government needs to announce a policy of protecting its national monuments, and a historic structure like Jantar Mantar needs to be protected from the melee of agitational politics, no matter who is organizing the agitation and for what cause.

Ultimately, Jantar Mantar needs to be protected from two things: (i) thousands of people thronging the iconic structure for days and (ii) terrorists using the occasion to gain maximum international publicity with minimum effort and planning. After all, how would the government respond if civil society decided to hold its next agitation at the Taj Mahal?

Why the Govt. is so adamant to bring the PM into the ambit of Lokpal Bill. Why they are acting so protective here. Jantar Mantar, the scientific heritage of India has now become an agitational hub. In Hyderabad, the capital of Andhra Pradesh, there is a place ear-marked for these kind of protests in the heart of the city. Anna need not sit at Jantar Mantar to attract attention of all. He should think of shifting the place to continue his fast to quell out the criticism against him. I have not seen any insincerity in Anna's effort as alleged by our friend Mr. Munshi.

"...We should oppose all those, who try to defame People who are fighting against Corruption..."

There are plenty of organizations (NGO) working against corruption. for e.g. Janagraha, Loksatta etc etc. Why nobody wants to support these NGOs when they have been fighting corruption for more than a decade. Anna came into this yesterday.

"...We should oppose all those, who try to defame People who are fighting against Corruption..."

We will not defame anybody who is sincere in eradicating corruption. The eradication of corruption has to start from a place like the RTO's office and NOT from PMO. Anna is not sincere and hence we have no choice but to oppose fake Anna.

As per my age I do not see difference between holding a knife at one hand and keeping it onto self throat and fasting unto death or holding a match box ready to fire your body drenched in petrol.
Everything kills yourself so all are equal a type of suicidal attempt hence a polite way of blackmailing.
Unless we Indian understand this we will continue to be fooled by such ill motivated persons who does not even realize that a person is a citizen first then comes his or her individuality.
Thanks for the referral Mr Rajeev Ji.

Our BJP leaders are also not fit for democracy but fit for democrazy. Our parliament is 'Chambal GANG' for our nation which includes MPs of the NDA. Our voters are short minded. Then how can corruption be controlled?

1. People want everything to be done by the Government.

That is because they say that Bhagawan Ram did everything for the people, so why not the government of india..... is what our RSS faketriots are shouting...

2. People put blame for all their woes on Government forgetting that government is made of this own people.

This is what is taught by the RSS in their study classes that once we drive all minorities out of india and remove the INC from power, we can establish ram rajya. Ram rajya means nobody has to do any work. You will get free pay check because india is abundant. Right now hindus have nothing to eat because of the congress and minorities looting the great india.

3. Section of people want to implement their own agenda by bringing in a puppet government run by religions fanatics.

Yes, it is the hindutva people. They are going to establish ram rajya where hindus do not have to do any work at all - free pay check is what ram rajya is all about.

3. The only aim of the opposition party being to somehow come into power, it do not act responsibly in the issues of national interest and cooperate with the government to overcome these.

How can they do that - other than Arun Jaitley, ram jethmalani etc most of them (in the BJP) do not even know to write their own name without a spelling mistake. Most of them haven't been to school....its like pakistan. These people have attended the RSS organized schools where it is all about ram rajya. If we ask a BJP MP about the infrastructure in his constituency or about budget deficit, he gets angry because he does n't understand these terms....then he will say "ram will take care of all these".

The problem as I see is the change in mind set of the people as a whole.

1. People want everything to be done by the Government.

2. People put blame for all their woes on Government forgetting that government is made of this own people.

3. Section of people want to implement their own agenda by bringing in a puppet government run by religions fanatics.

3. The only aim of the opposition party being to somehow come into power, it do not act responsibly in the issues of national interest and cooperate with the government to overcome these. Because of this it has become impossible to conduct effective governance of the country by the rualng coalition.

4. Greed of people has grown to such extent that they want to influence the government for their own good.
In total people forget that governments are only facilitators on behalf of people and not GODs. Even GODs do not deliver anything and everything that people want. Everyone has to put in some effort to get what they need.

Mr. Rajeev Ji,
I wonder why the internationally acclaimed and honored brainy Indians are so much dependent on a single person's (Anna Hazare) wills of getting a seat confirmed for him in the center?
Now the Indian mass is bypassing their thinking and analyzing capabilities to ignore the fact that every Indian has not selected or elected the People's Representative part of the Lokpal. I can see that Mr. Anna Hazare himself is the greatest enemy in formation of the panel by becoming stubborn to include the Prime Minister now only whence it can be done at later stages after formation.
God only can help India now if we still fail to understand the actual truth behind the projected one.
By any way this "Fasting Technique" is not recent phenomena, this is the age old legal blackmailing practice exercised by many people from the past.
Thanks for the referral.

First of all, Anna Hazare is not sincere in his approach to root out corruption. If he was sincere, then he would have approached this issue in stages, starting from the corruption in government offices. Instead, he is targeting the PM, which is foolish.

"The government for its part has accused Hazare and Ramdev of acting on behalf of the Bhartiya Janta Party and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. Whether or not this is true, ..."
Well, his phone records are more than enough to establish this.

Mr. Rajeev, the iconic structure of Jantar Mantar is now in the midst of high rise buildings and concrete jungle. The sheen of this iconic structure has already been lost! This UPA-II is watering leaves of "cactus leaves", as they know one sand storm will uproot the plant itself, why to water the roots! They also know that they have two more years to go to people, by then they would mesmerise them with some sops during the fag end to come back to power! They also know that people have very short memories!

Welcome back to Too Step after a gap of nearly a week ! "Watering the leaves instead of watering the roots" is a phrase I heard first time. I feel that the PM and Judiciary are to be kept out of the Bill. MPs and Ministers must come under its scrutiny. I understand that Anna is ready to move to other place than Jantar mantar. Let's see. Good to see your postings again sir.
