Honour Killing - A Growing Concern

Guys, here is something which will give an idea about the barbaric activities happening recently....

It might be time to apply a psychoanalytical approach to honour killings and other social issues of our times, in order to devise ways to engage with pathologies at a community level, says Rakesh Shukla (Supreme Court Lawyer)

The killing in July 2009 of 21-year-old Ved Pal in Singhwal village in Haryana when he had gone, accompanied by policemen, to pick up his wife Sonia, has re-focused attention on the honour killings of couples in accordance with a decision by the khap, or caste panchayat, and with the community’s complete approval. In this particular case, after carrying out the panchayat’s death sentence, a 400-strong mob from the village displayed the victim’s battered body like a trophy at a crossing in the centre of the village. Ved Pal had married Sonia, who belonged to the same gotra, four months earlier, against the wishes of her family.

Incest is a strong taboo in almost all societies. As far as the enactment into law of this taboo is concerned, the Hindu Marriage Act of 1954 bars marriage between sapindas — people within the third generation in the line of ascent through the mother, and fifth generation in the line of ascent through the father. It also bars marriage between certain “degrees of prohibited relationships”, including brothers and sisters. The law thus clearly spells out the ingredients of a valid marriage and excludes marriage between close relatives.

The moral indignation is ostensibly at the ‘vitiation’ of the ‘pure’ brother-sister bond by the act of marriage and sexual relations. At the conscious level, there is great reverence for the “pure” mother and sister. However, ‘mother-f*****’ and ‘sister-f*****’ are among the most common abuses and are part of routine speech in the region.

In fact, interventions in incidents of harassment of women in public spaces often see the perpetrator called a ‘sister-f*****’, while simultaneously trying to make him feel ashamed by enquiring whether or not he has a mother or sisters at home — indicative of ‘unbrotherly’ and ‘non-son-like’ feelings towards mothers and sisters. These thoughts of a ‘pure’ mother and ‘virgin’ sister evoke strong feelings of guilt at being ‘bad’ and are possibly difficult to tolerate. They are buried deep in the unconscious.

Even whilst growing up, adolescent boys in general have no acceptable outlet for their pent-up sexual drive. The revering of brahmacharya (celibacy) along with beliefs about loss of semen leading to weakness of the body, mind and spirit acts as a block to healthy masturbation. Even when ‘indulged’ in, it comes ridden with guilt, anxieties and fears about the consequences. Sexual fantasies involving close family members, and lack of interaction and sexual activity among peers, fuels further frustration accompanied by feelings of guilt and perversion too stressful to bear; they are suppressed in the unconscious.

It is possible that these suppressed feelings are mobilised and projected and whipped into righteous frenzy when two people from the same gotra get married, implicit in which is the having of sexual relations. The transgressing couple becomes the repository of all that is ‘impure’ and ‘bad’, while one remains ‘pure’ and ‘good’. It leads to the crossing of a certain threshold where an ‘othering’ takes place, and the ‘evil’, ‘lustful’, ‘animal’ couple become transformed into beast-like creatures, threatening all that is ‘sacred’ and ‘pure’, and so deserving of death.

Mr.Ayan, it is really ridiculous and condemnable. In a civilized society like us it should not happen. The level of education and understanding the central issue for the problems are missing. For any problem, there is a solution if properly approached.

Most of these activities happen because people have a herd mentality of belonging to a certain caste, which might give a kick to their egos. Also, fear of being left alone also forces people to submit to some idiotic ideologies meant to satisfy certain powerful people in the group/caste. People should step out of their comfort zone and accept certain realities of life - that they are supposed to take care of their family first and not be blinded by superfluous norms. Why should anyone outside of my family tell me what I am supposed to do?

Lack of clear understanding of issues and falsified EGO being used in name of self respect.

I do not know how many more incarnation of god is required to save our society from superstition & sufferings. We the people make our place hell or heaven through our thought, act and deed. We need just another independence movement from hunger, illitracy, all kind of unreligious activities to save our nation.

Tribal wanted to live as tribal. Even though, world progressed & technology changed life styles, there are groups (you can say in sociological terms Tribal)that does not want to come out of the social illusion & wanted to survive on this illusion only. This kind of people need to be identified on community & religion basis & are brought to the nascent world living. Long back I read, untraceable tribal are, still living in inaccessible parts of world. They follow their social rituals irrespective of the legal system what is existing in the world.Only media need to highlight this social evils & educate these tribal group. NGO's & Social organization needs to wake up the people on this issues. Also, mass media can effectively create an awareness. Just, merely harping on judiciary, is not going to help. It is the society that is to decide what is required for it. Systemic element can do only protective measure but has no power to remove it. Its, the people to give up this kind of practices.

I disagree with your views Ayan. Also, this is not Honour Killing. This is mob killing. Infact, killing can not be labeled. I believe human is as animal as you see animal with human feeling. Any human/person can be made to believe to kill with conviction. Your rage can deceive you to the point of murder. If the person is made to live unhealthy, he can loose control of his anger and can behave like animal. Any killing in that case is just a fit of rage except till it become more of a habit. In case of mob though, small amount of anger of so many people is fatal to the victim. Also, when each member of of the mob empathize with other member for his anger.

This barbaric act cannot be accepted in enlightened societies. If this is happening in our Country it means that there is still a long way to go before we become enlightened. I am a strict follower of hinduism and in my knowledge this is a religion which has given more freedom to the individual and has a way out even for the most stringent laws laid by our forefathers. Aryans or Dravidians, as long as we are Hindus, the concept of "Honour Killing" can never be accepted or allowed. But because of "Vote Bank Politics" no-body in the Political system or the so called "Reformers" can or will voice their protests in public. It is a shame for all of us.

A well written, thoughtful article. Only a person with deep rooted social awareness can understand the depth. Its atrocious on the part of those heidious individuals who commit this crime but its even more unreasonable as of not discussing the issue openly. I strongly beleive tht rural community are not exposed to the magnaminous prosperity of outer world and are busy dwelling on the past ideologies transferred from their ancestors, thus giving them very little margin of core understanding. If just getting amrried within sub caste can bring out their beast imagine if a lesbian/gay couple come within their striking distance. There is nothing called as honour killing, its jus a fake demonstration of their incapability to handle broad minded beliefs. These people have never enjoyed life fully, and so they harbour ill feelings eventually not letting others enjoy, even if they are their own flesh & blood.Sick minds.

True this can be one psychological aspect behind "Honour killing" in India, the number of which is growing alarmingly these days. But I think there can be a feeling of insecurity too attached to these kinds of mob behaviour finding the most gruesome expression in murder. The rules regarding moralities in India have been a barrier for any kind of free expression of human emotions since the colonialist period at least even if not from before. And for some people "envy" trsnforms into brutality. But apart from that, being a 'social animal' have been the most 'moral objective' of an Indian's life. Therefore when killing becomes an 'social activity', be it of the name of 'family honour', 'cast' or 'religion' or even 'honour of the local political leader', a group of people participate in this wiilingly in order to be aligned with that part of the society/community. I am not a psychiatrist, but would like to know is this because of Indian's growing feeling of insecurity leading to growing dependence on group/community they are part of?

Simply unbelivable though I was watching a debate in NDTV regarding Khap Panchyat some days back but the it is so deep rooted not known to me. I think the Panch Pradhan and members of the panchyat should be killed by bullets without any mercy. Once again a fall out of Democracy.
Do you think this sort of things will ever happen in Russia, Chaina or in Europe inclrding England and also USA?
I think your channel should take up this more strongly in order to erdicate them from the system altogether.

There is not big-deal psychology involved in these honour killings except certain retrograde communities trying to impose outdated tribal practices into our Modern Day Society.

This is an atrocious article especially coming from an NDTV correspondent. This is not about honour killings at all. this is about how the street side abuses work. May be we should start discussing a more important and broader topic, "Is journalism going down the drains in India?"
I think So!!!!
