Believe me everybody out there not all MBA institutes lead to a lucrative career. One should be extremely cautious while selecting a B School. So go through the article for the Top B-schools that one should aim for....
The demand of MBAs has increased exponentially with India opening up its economy. With competition hotting up, more and more Multinationals setting up shop in India and traditional family run businesses embracing professional practices to overcome the tough times, the demand for MBA professionals can only move up. Consequently, it is not surprising to know why the average starting salary at the Indian Institute of Management (IIMs) is to the tune of 6 lacs per annum.
The highest starting salary at IIM Ahmedabad in placements was a mind boggling US $ 225,000 (over Rs. 1 crore) apart from the lifestyle in New York. Forget salaries, the job responsibilities and the career growth offered by jobs at campus, recruitments at these institutes, are way beyond comparison to most other career avenues provide. This was way back but now the numbers are much more mind boggling..
Fuelled by such data, it is not at all surprising that the number of MBA aspirants have ballooned to more than one lakh. The flip side of this development is that numerous institutes offering MBA programs have mushroomed in almost every corner of a city. Does MBA degree / diplomas from any such institute offer such sure shot careers. The answer is a resounding NO! Except a handful of top B Schools, MBA from other institutes is not even worth the paper on which the degree / diploma is offered. A MBA aspirant should exercise extreme caution in selecting, which B Schools one should apply to. In all there are only around 3000 good seats in various institutes, which can guarantee a decent campus placement and a secure career option. Below is the list of some of the top B-Schools.
Indian Institute of Management (IIMs):
IIMs are autonomous institutes set up by Human Resource ministry of Government of India and are undoubtedly the best of the lot. There are six IIMs namely Ahmedabad, Kolkatta, Bangalore, Lucknow, Khozikode and Indore. The institutes offer a Post Graduate Diploma in Management and are fully residential programs.
Xavier's Labor Relation Institute, Jamshedpur (XLRI):
As the name suggests the institute specializes in and is the best for Personnel Management and Industrial Relations (PM&IR). However, its BMD program for other specializations like Marketing, Finance is also as good as the IIMs.
S P Jain, Mumbai:
The institute offers specialization in Marketing Management, Finance Management, Manufacturing Management, International Business and Information Management. The only slight drawback for a student is that he has to choose a specialization while applying to the institute and would be considered only for that specialization. At most other B Schools one has to choose a specialization only after the first year, when one would have a decent idea about all specializations.
Management Development Institute, Gurgaon (MDI):
This institute shot into prominence after its hugely successful MDP program and has repeated the success story with its MBA program.
Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi University (FMS):
One of the oldest MBA programs in India, FMS has placements comparable to any other top B School. The flip side is that being affiliated to a university, it does not enjoy enough flexibility in its operations and also is not a fully residential program.
Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai (JBIMS):
Located in the commercial capital of India does help JBIMS in its placement and is another institute definitely worth applying to. By Being affiliated to the University of Mumbai, not only does it lose on the flexibility in operations, but also has to follow the reservation rules laid down by the Directorate of Technical Education. Thus only 15% of seats are available for a student graduating from any other University in Maharashtra than Mumbai University and only 10% for students graduating from outside Maharashtra.
Tata Institute of Social Studies, Mumbai (TISS):
The best institute after XLRI for PM & IR. A intensive program that requires a student to work closely with as many as four different companies for project work and also being on the forefront on social work like lending a helping hand in the Orissa floods and the Gujarat earthquake, definitely adds a lot of value to the students. However the only specialization offered is PM & IR.
Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, Delhi (IIFT):
As the name suggests, the institute offers specialization in Foreign Trade or International Business.
Mudra Institute of Communication and Advertisement , Ahmedabad (MICA):
MICA has been set up by advertising major Mudra. It offers specialization in Advertising, Communication and Public Relations.
Indian Institute of Technology (IITs):
The IITs have also started offering a MBA program, though the placements are predominantly in Systems and Operations specializations.
Institute of Rural Management, Anand, Gujarat (IRMA):
Setup by the Verghese Kurien of Amul fame, the Institute is the best for you if rural management is what inspires you. A lot of IRMA alumni are found in development agencies like World Bank, IMF, UNDP, etc.
National Institute of Industrial Engineering, Mumbai (NITIE):
While the institute's program in Industrial Engineering is beyond comparison, its Industrial Management program has also carved a name for itself and the placements of Systems and Operations are one of the best
Apart from the above institutes, Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) Mumbai, Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) Ghaziabad, T.A.Pai Manipal (TAPMI), Xavier's Institute of Management Bhubaneshwar (XIMB), Goa Institute of Management (GIM), Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies are also good institutes. Other fairly decent institutes would be Fore School of Management Delhi (FSM), International Management Institute Delhi (IMI), Sydenham Mumbai, Somaiya Mumbai, and University Business School Chandigarh (UBS).
The admission process for most of the above institutes consists of two stages. Stage one is a written test testing a student on English Usage, Reading Comprehension, Quantitative Aptitude, Data Interpretation, Reasoning and General Awareness. The second stage of selection is the Personality Assessment stage. After the written test an Interview and GD call is sent to select few. Mostly, between the GD and Interview there is no elimination.
