A fellow had just been hired as the new CEO of a large high tech corporation.

The CEO who was stepping down met with him privately and presented him with three numbered envelopes. “Open these if you run up against a problem you don’t think you can solve,” he said.

Well, things went along pretty smoothly, but six months later, sales took a downturn and he was really catching a lot of heat. About at his wit’s end, he remembered the envelopes.

He went to his drawer and took out the first envelope. The message read, “Blame your predecessor.” The new CEO called a press conference and tactfully laid the blame at the feet of the previous CEO. Satisfied with his comments, the press and Wall Street responded positively, sales began to pick up and the problem was soon behind him.

About a year later, the company was again experiencing a slight dip in sales, combined with serious product problems. Having learned from his previous experience, the CEO quickly opened the second envelope. The message read, “Reorganize.” This he did, and the company quickly rebounded.

After several consecutive profitable quarters, the company once again fell on difficult times. The CEO went to his office, closed the door and opened the third envelope.

The message said,

 “Prepare Three Envelopes.”

Hi Ms Pi, It's a good anecdote which is the norm of a human being when failure is at his door steps.
Well ! these three envelops are for public view for getting more profit.the reorganisation also has limits.if every ceo reorganises then the very structure for which an organisations is formed is defeated. It loses its shin.
Long standing consistent growth is not seen as forefront of strategy by the promoters.
Profit is the ultimate aim at any cost losing the very fabric of the peoples management , public image building and brand management.
Reorganising is very dangerous if it is not kept within its limitations just by only thinking on multitasking to get less people take more jobs and responsibilities at the same cost to company.
CEO's dont realise and sometimes do not bother that a man can do a limited job in a particular day of 8hours where one is efficient only for 5 to 6 hours at the most.
These days one finds the JOB Discription in so detail where an employee cannot even remember what was told and desired and also the management staff who has described it cannot for sure monitor i to get the job done.
Hence if the CEOs and the promoters think business, management and profits should go hand in hand only can survive .
otherwise one has too keep on following the three envelop principles and finally get his company soled out too.
regards

Miseries articulated nicely in a jovial manner. Mr. Pi, though it may seem far from reality, majority of the corporates are facing these problems. Blame game, mudslinging exercise, etc. have become parts of corporates also, after taking cues from the political masters!

Madam, politics and media can do so many things and in joke already mentioned that CEO has organized press conference and won the confidence by blaming. CEO has only two options either he will reorganize the organization or to leave organization.

Here i would like to share real example. A case of DB Corp. Ltd.(Divya bhaskar group), when DB corp has listed its company in BSE market, so many negative points are came in market, news paper. "Gujarat Samachar" a very popular newspaper in Gujarat (Gujarati edition)...this publication had been printed negative articles about DB Corp.

Then after, DB corp Chairman was coming into the picture and won the confidence of public by giving so many articles in various publication, commitments etc. Many public have confidence at that time and they were subscribe DB corp issue also. Slowly , everything was going fine and DB corp now enjoying as LTD. company as well as growing fast.

Nice article Pi sir.. keep posting such article...

Srinivasji, both of you are right ! Shifting the blame will not work always and when re-organisation fails, quitting is the only option left. It is just a joke extracted from internet to keep readers happy !! Not meant for serious debates !

A good joke sir. I surprise on the serious argument of madam Jagdeep Kaur. Why cant we make three envelops and quit. Even after reoganising, if the organisation could not set on track, it is suicidal to continue in that organisation. It is always better to leave the organisation. The predecessor has rightly advised his successor. It is not that easy for any successor to take stalk of the situation within weeks of his taking charge. It is always better to escape from the situation for the time being. Once he settled, it is his headache to reorganise the organisation set up to his functioning style and bring changes as required to keep the organisation on winning path. If the organisation is failing time and again it is not the organisation to settle. It is better to leave such organisation. Beautiful insight sir. Thank you very much.

It is not always easy to make three envelopes and move away.Reorganization is good but blame shifting may not always work.
