A Beautiful Story I came across on Time Management and Setting Priorities.

A professor stood before his class and had some items in front of him. When class began, wordlessly he picked up a large empty jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks right to the top, rocks about 2" diameter.

He then asked the students if the jar was full? They agreed that it was.

So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them in to the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open areas between the rocks. The students laughed.

He asked his students again if the jar was full? They agreed that yes,it was.

The professor then picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else.

"Now," said the professor, "I want you to recognize that this is your life.

The rocks are the important things - your family, your partner, your health, your children -anything that is so important to you that if it were lost, you would be nearly destroyed.

The pebbles are the other things in life that matter, but on a smaller scale. The pebbles represent things like your job, house, or car.

The sand is everything else, the "small stuff."

"If you put the sand or the pebbles into the jar first, there is no room for the rocks.

The same goes for your life. If you spend all your energy and time on the small stuff, material things, you will never have room for the things that are truly most important.

Pay attention to the things that are Important in your life and spend time on the Important.

Some of the Important's are:

Spend time with your Family.
Spend time with your People.
Spend time for your Customers.
Play with your children.
Take time to get medical checkups.
Take your partner out once a while.
Take time to renew yourself.
Find time for maintainance.
Spend time on Preventing than on Solving Problems

***** Take care of the rocks first - the things that really matter.****

Set your priorities, the rest is just pebbles and sand.

Believe in yourself, know what you want, and make it happen!

Absolutely right Mr.Pasha, the best and effective way of time management is by defining priorities, by not creating impossible situation and avoiding distractions. A weekly calendar or daily to do list will surely help in managing time well.

ASAK Mr. Pasha,

This example reminds me of one of the activities done during the workshop by Mr. Steven Covey called "Big Rocks". I thank you for relating it with an example. Infact a very good example to be elaborated to the masses.

In simple words time management is nothing but priority management. We have time but its not enough to do everything we want. So we have to set priorities on what has to be completed first and what later. Same goes here...select your priority first...is it family or career or children or happiness...and then decide what to do and what not to...

Remember we have to sacrifice something to do or get something...

Hi Pasha

The article is really true we need to balance both the life (Professional & Personal).

For within the professional time whatever we spend based on our industry, responsabilties, etc...
-set priorities and manage your time to meet deadlines,
-set and achieve goals,
-get over your internal barriers when putting your goals and plans in action,
-effectively organize your daily actions
-make smarter decisions faster,
-uncover better options,
-work in a team or build one,
-prevent burnout,
