BREA – Turning trash into energy.
That's the idea behind a new power plant the crews began building this week at the Olinda Alpha Landfill above Brea.
The plant will generate up to 37.5 megawatts by collecting the methane gas naturally generated by decomposing trash and turning it into electricity – enough wattage to consistently power up to 22,000 homes.
That energy will go to Anaheim electricity users; Anaheim happens to send its trash to the county-owned Olinda Alpha Landfill.
"In that way it is coming full circle, so customers can feel good about that," said Margie Otto, a spokeswoman for Anaheim Public Utilities. "We feel like this project is a good model."
A much smaller plant that generates about 5 mega-watts has been operating at Olinda Alpha since 2007.
Pleased with the results, the county, in partnership with Broadrock Renewables, decided to use a $10-million federal stimulus grant to help build the plant along with a private investment.
We too need to follow a similar example, what do you say??
