UNCONVENTIONAL ADDITIVE FOR BITUMEN IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION
Jagdish Prasad, PWD, Muzaffarnagar; S.K.Khanna, AICTE, New Delhi
A.K. Gupta and S.S. Jain, University of Roorkee, Roorkee

SYNOPSIS

In India, most of the existing all weather roads are of bituminous surfaces. Properties of bitumen depend upon the source and its manufacturing processes. In spite of all the care and attention in the construction, bituminous surfaces sometimes fail prematurely. Most commonly, the premature failure occurs due to the effect of water and climatic temperature variations.
In this paper, an attempt has been made to document the effects or an additive on conventional properties of bitumen. The properties considered here in are penetration value, softening point, ductility and stripping value. The additive is derived from plant organism. Various tests have been conducted on the mixture of 80/100 grade bitumen with different percentages of additive.
Using the values of softening point and penetration obtained at various percentages of additives, the various properties such as viscosity (n), penetration temperature susceptibility (PTS) and penetration index (PT) have been calculated. The relationships between different parameters of physical properties of bitumen have been developed using the Linear Regression Technique. The relationships have been developed in the form of equations and are also depicted in the form of figures. On the basis of the present investigation, it is observed that the additive used in this study would be suitable for hot as well as, cold regions. Further, it has been observed that 4.5 percent of additive with 80/100 grade bitumen generally indicates the best overall result.

The write-up can not be used by lay-man because the technical jargon used and neither can be used by engineers since there is nothing more than jargon.Sorry this insight gives no technical information at all.
What I can know from this is that there is paper written on this topic that too with no information that where it is published.
