The death toll in Up train accident now is 53.. This included some people wiht Swedish nationality too. There are about 250 people who are being treated at hospital. Kalka mail got derailed on sunday at 12.20 pm. the train was moving at 180 km/hr. It is said that there was no fault in the track and the cabinman had told him that when the train was close to pole number 927/23, its engine started shaking and emitting smoke, soon after which the mishap took place. According to survivors and eyewitnesses, the driver applied emergency brakes. The driver himself is critically injured and not in a position to say what made him apply the brakes. Railway officials confirm that the train was hurtling at the maximum speed of around 108-110 km per hour and did not rule out sabotage. Traffic was hit in the busy Delhi-Howrah corridor with 13 trains cancelled and 25 diverted. Here there is no one blame. Is it just fate??

Railway Ministers come and ago but no body guarantees safe journey. Common people are just like dolls in their system's hand. What's Railway's performance in terms of efficiency, amenities, technology, safety!? You'd find them their benchmark is old as the first accident since the Indian Govt was formed after the independence. We're pretty proud of our large and complex network, but beyond this day by day we all travel with our lifves surrendering in the Railway's hand. What they do is pay 5L to the dead and 1 lakh to seriously injured. And they wait for the next accident to happen! No improvement on safety & vigilance. When China has commenced Bullet we're miles and miles away. This country doesn't need democracy, but iron mind and hand like China who can straighten up the things.

Very unfortunate for Indian citizens we will have to live this way only. If you see during the regime of Mamata Banerjee she never travailed in train. This is most unfortunate but true.

I think there should be accountability and penal actions should be taken against errant officials, which has never been done in last couple of years.

Dear KaliyaMoorthy
I accept your argument that "At present, we do not know the cause of accident, so we can not pinpoint where the accountability failed." - Correct.

I will accept this too....."Generally, causation theory says, most of the accident occur due to Human Error. But, here we can not say anything now."....because the accident investigation is still going on.

Dear Mr. Munshi Ramchand,
I only talked about the System. Hope that system does not allow these behavior. Yes. it does allow, if it is in the charter of schedule. At present, we do not know the cause of accident, so we can not pinpoint where the accountability failed.

Generally, causation theory says, most of the accident occur due to Human Error. But, here we can not say anything now.

Kaliyamoorthy - In that case we should not worry about quality, responsibility and accountability etc etc. We should just take things as it comes. For example: The driver of a rajadhani express stops the train near a busy level crossing, gets out of the engine, goes to a nearby shop and drinks a pepsi, then comes back, get in and drives the train away. The total time wasted will be around 15 minutes. Should we question this guy or stopping the train to have a pepsi? Should we say "drivers do take breaks....after all they too are humans"?

Accidents do happen thats beyond ones' control. But, the best system is the one that minimize it. When I hear this, I also hear that 30 students die when ship drowned in Russia, & 5 die when a flight crash on ground in Russia . What to say for this?

Thanks,Sarika for referral. On the same subject, there is another discussion going on in the forum.I would say accident, though very tragic one can not be explained.57 casualties some thing railways must worry.Speed has nothing to do with accident.Accidents can happen even at speed 90KMPH.There is no reason for accident and there are so many extraneous reasons. There is regular maintenance of track, engines, signals, medical check of drivers and motormen. There is no utter chaos in the railways. The system is well structured.

This looks like a badly maintained engine and coaches. After all, who cares maintenance. Nobody dare to ask anybody if a train is fit for a trip. Honestly - it is God who is taking care of the trains in India, right from washing (rain) to its safety.

The tracks need to be upgraded to with stand the vibrations of such high speed trains. The over head traction cable also needs to be checked thoroughly along with the train bogies.
Yes, Indian trains and tracks also are not yet fit for high speeds. The technology being used for rail tracks are not commensurate to meet the high speeds. We just cant imitate Bullet Trains of China, Japan and the Western world without bringing a technological change in bogie designing, track designing, signaling system etc. Instead of paying attention, the successive Railway Ministers are interested in endorsing different railway projects for their own state. During the regime of the Mamataji as Railway Minister, modernisation of Railways took back seat and made railways a loss making organisation.

The maximum sanctioned speed on the Howrah Delhi route (cord line) is 160 KM PH.
However, this can be reduced based on local circumstances. For Kalka Mail, 100-110 is good speed. If it travels at lower speed, it will take forever to reach its destination, given the number of stops it has.
Did you know that Kalka Mail is the oldest running train in the continent ?

Anyway, it seems the driver applied emergency brakes. Why ? Maybe to save a stray vehicle ? Nobody knows for sure. Maybe something was wrong on the track, we can only speculate.
The Railways are heavily loaded and every new Railway Minister only introduces new Garib Raths or Durontos or Sampark Krantis!

Safety is still not up to the mark, neither is the response to emergency situations.
Relief train reached at 5 am this morning, one can imagine how badly we are prepared to deal with such contingencies.

Trains are designed to apply brakes simulataneously in all compartments once the vacum is released by the driver in the engine vagon to prevent such accidents. It is critical that the braking sytem in every compartment is fully effective as even failure of the brake in one compartment can cause such accident especially when the tarain is moving fast.
Indian rails are not yet fit for high speeds. Even a section in between that is weak can cause problem at high speeds. In no circumstances the speed should not exceed 90 kms. even in the best maintained track.

Twin accidents in a day is really worrisome! The mishap has happened. Wear and tear of engines, bogies, tracks, points, signals, on top of that human error are all responsible for such untoward accidents. No one apparently takes responsibility of such nasty happenings. If the workers are duty-bound, such incidents can be minimised! Periodical maintenance of engines, bogies are required, but due to heavy rush, these issues are negated.
