We care – do you?

Connecting the Old Age Homes/Orphanages to the Society

Spurting life expectancy and plummeting social ethos: Each one of us is caught up in chasing our dreams and goals, but is least bothered about someone who needs our help next door. Life expectancy is steadily increasing, also the woes of the elderly ones who have been left out in the old-age homes by their ‘near and dear ones’ for obvious reasons. They deserve to live with dignity, and above all, want to secure themselves. Unfortunately, insecurity, loneliness and want of companionship have become a daily reality for the elderly persons.

Loosely coupled members of the society: On the contrary, orphanages for children and old-age home for elders are run as independent entities. Sadly, elders and children in these homes are forgotten these days and kept away from the mainstream life. Campus Around endeavors to bring them together in nurturing context in which elders can share their experience and knowledge and the children can spread their love and joy to elders.

Importance of inclusiveness: Campus Around intends to share a social networking space and to provide opportunity for them to live in a community, where they can experience the joy of connecting with other people, helping each other out and experiencing first hand, how world becomes a better place when we start living, loving, caring, sharing and looking out for each other.

Everyone counts: Campus Around is an initiative for seamless and sustainable community building, not based on any particular philosophy or faith or ideology. We provide a common platform for all in the community, without favour or nepotism, to share their wisdom and strengths. If you are a painter, you share your art; if you are a counselor, you may help, guide your fellow community members; if you are a yoga instructor, you may guide the interested residents around to make them stay physically and mentally fit; if you are in engineering or medicine or accounting or any other industry which may have relevance to school education directly or indirectly, Campus Around provides you a platform to share your expertise with the members of the community.

Transition from theory to practice: Transferring of such expertise would be distilled through various processes and the resultant output would be transmitted to the children through pedagogical approach by the teachers concerned. This new-found approach to acquiring and imparting knowledge, in turn, will help both teachers and children to understand the underlying concepts, of the otherwise theoretical content, to apply them in real life situations. Whatever strengths, talents and expertise one has, if we develop the habit of sharing, we can help shape the character of our community, which of late, is losing its luster and sheen.

Old is gold: Elders, the ignored torch-bearers of this society, could be encouraged to mentor the younger generation by helping them identify their inherent dormant potential and hand-hold them to work towards their fulfillment. This process will offer a renewed ray of hope for successful individual change leading to a strong societal impact. The younger generation would be a key beneficiary by acquiring attitudes, beliefs, values and assumptions during such social interactions. In an interconnected society, which accepts the craving of an individual’s need for recognition, every change will be viewed as a more open interconnected process, making this initiative a continuous and sustainable one. This will eventually lead to helping each other to live a life with dignity, shape our children’s future for a holistic and accomplished life.

Thanks Mr. Raju for reflecting upon it instantaneously. I'll surely require your immense contribution in the initiative.
Thanks Mr. Cherian for your valuable inputs. We are going to be very cautious and would surely work towards making this initiative a success, applying probable, workable methodologies, rather than attempting some thing that has failed our education system in the past. We will surely be guided by your noble thoughts, time and again.
Thanks Mr.Sudhakar and Mr. Ravichandran for your encouraging words. I would seek your valuable inputs in making this initiative a success.

I still await responses from our other valuable members of Toostep. This initiative is for a common cause.

Any idea with good intentions need not be workable idea. If we look at it this way the youngsters who will access such mentoring will be those who are already in the development states towards it which is a rare phenomena here in our environment. Most of our youngsters dream, fantasize and probably many of them don't wind up building bridges towards their dreams. Mentoring a minute few representatives of the society may not be worth waiting for the outcomes. I am sure such ideas emmnate from our 'gurukulum' culture which per se is not very pragmatic. For that matter the mentoring recieved from our elders made us all more metaphysical rather than pragmatic which we derived from our life abroad.
Considering all these simple factors the better directions will be to create state of the art campuses around 40 of them around the country manned by academician trained in the Greek academic culture where pragmatism of the students in their profession is given more value.
Thanks Mr. Muralidharan for the referral.

@ Mr. Raju V P: For a start you if time permits you may go through the presentations/documents in our slideshare playlist in our website homepage www.campusaround.org. You are bound to get many questions as you go through them and we can take the thread from that point. For this movement of change everyone's contribution counts. Thanks.

@ Mr.Murali: We should take further inputs and delve deep on the proximity of the Old Age Homes to Campuses. Considering that we are beginning work in the NCR of Delhi for our pilot, we should get a few strategic and a little more grass root level activist on the field to get things moving.
