I am the person in charge of and responsible for my life and well-being. My happiness comes not from waiting for others to validate me and make me feel good about myself, but by realizing that I can choose my attitude and response to whatever happens. Life presents us with many experiences in order to learn. Some are painful.

Next time you feel a mental ouch, stop and listen to what is going on inside of you heart and head. Don't judge; just listen. Ask what is the possible lesson you need to learn from the experience.

It may sound something like this, "Hey everyone, look at me, look at me. Please pity poor me. You should pity me because I have it so bad. Please tell me that you feel sorry for me. That way I can tell you know I am here, you feel sorry for me and I can become the centre of your universe. Tell me I am a poor creature and that I am such a tragic hero because of all I endure."

I know what you are thinking. You are saying, "I don't talk like that," but let me assure you that if you are hurt, bitter, or afraid, you do. If you are really honest with yourself, you will hear some version of this speech, and, I speak from experience, it will not give you the result you expect or desire. It will only make others frustrated with you. I know; I've been there.

If your voice is telling you that you should feel sorry for yourself, that others have wronged you and that people should pity you, stop! Refuse to listen to such rubbish. You are the creator of the quality of your life. You and only you! No one else can touch you, unless you agree to the pain. Say no and let it go.

Find the lesson your pain has to teach you. What attitudes do you need to change? How about habits you may need to modify? Do you need to give or seek forgiveness? Do you need to become more physically active or eat better quality food? Can you be more assertive in your relationships, or maybe more respectful?

Once you have learned your particular lesson, take whatever action necessary, and with a heart full of gratitude, embrace all the wonders in your life.
