This is very good and inspiring article.Light is always  compared to knowledge dispelling ignorance(TAMASOMAA JYOTIRGAMAYA). In the same vein, it is further taught that YE SHALL BE LIGHT UNTO THYSELF WHEN THE DARKNESS HOVERS ALL AROUND( APPO DEEPO BHAV).

I was searching for this when I saw this posting. Now I got it

we light the lamp to bow down to knowledge as the greatest of all forms of wealth 
 
Why not light a bulb or tube light? That too would remove darkness. But the traditional oil lamp has a further spiritual significance. The oil or ghee in the lamp symbolizes our vaasanas or negative tendencies and the wick, the ego. When lit by spiritual knowledge, the vaasanas get slowly exhausted and the ego too finally perishes. The flame of a lamp always burns upwards. Similarly we should acquire such knowledge as to take us towards higher ideals. 
 
Whilst lighting the lamp we thus pray: 

Deepajyothi parabrahma
Deepa sarva tamopahaha
Deepena saadhyate saram
Sandhyaa deepo namostute
 
I prostrate to the dawn/dusk lamp; whose light is the Knowledge Principle (the Supreme Lord), which removes the darkness of ignorance and by which all can be achieved in life.

 Nikhil,A very good perception and thanks for referral.A Lamp in the Indian contest is not a lamp,but a definitive path leading to happiness, prosperity,purity,integrity,honesty and to top it all,it inspires to dispel darkness,bring smile on the faces and so on. 

Light symbolizes knowledge, and darkness - ignorance. The Lord is the "Knowledge Principle" (Chaitanya) who is the source, the enlivener and the illuminator of all knowledge. Hence light is worshiped as the Lord himself. But i have one  question that why not we light a a bulb or tubelight?

Could it be a tradition carried on from times when there was no electricity and lighting a lamp was utilitarian rather than philosophical? Just a thought.....

to fight the darkness of life, we light a lamp.....

Well lighting a lamp is also a symbol of happiness and joy.we often light the lamp during some festival to rejoice ourselves and also to mark the beginning of something new and auspicious .......

We can say, " Light glitters. So do, your life / organization be"

In sanskrit our sages have taught us since ages and centuries that "tamaso ma jyotirgamay" - which means that light dispels darkness ; another way of expressing this thought is that with the lighting of a lamp, or even with just a ray of light, darkness all around is vanquished once and for all! 
Light therefore signifies knowledge, and light dispels ignorance; light signifies life and spreads positive thoughts and liveliness all around, light dispels death and discourages negativism all around! I hope this covers all aspects that light signifies.
