Why we don’t have international Brands?

Humanity translated into the present state through stages of development or what we call Evolution. From primates to humanoids to homo sapiens to the present state of homo homo sapiens. The thing that differentiates these stages is not only the physical appearances of each but change in belief systems and attitudes of each entity. Intelligence levels too got expanded as the evolution process took shape. Humanoids invented habitats, homo sapiens the wheel and the homo homo sapiens the present state of civilization. From humanoids to homo homo sapiens also saw our societies move from a ‘hunter gatherer society’ to ‘agrarian or foreaging’ to ‘trade and markets’.

Now, when we were fore aging society we used to barter and later on when currency was adopted into trade. The belief system involved were almost same as now then where the QUALITY AND FUNCTIONALITY OF THE THING EXCHANGED WAS GURANTEED BY NATURE. Then when we moved into the present state the exchanges though required such guarantees, the nature left the seen and the responsibility fell into human hands and modern science of economics, business, production, technology started replacing nature as the guarantor of quality and fair terms of trade.

We as nation is still an ‘agrarian’ society and providers of these modern exchanges still hasn’t adopted the new way of thinking providing and running these modern markets. They live in the past ‘agrarian’ state of mind of providing exchanges without guarantees where the attitude of the vendor is only to see that the cash in the buyers pocket somehow gets into yours. Then it used to be legal since nature guaranteed quality and functionality of the product which the farmer or producer needn’t have had to worry much about. This blind spot in our development leaves room for unfair exchanges, products devoid of dimensions of fair exchange which are not acceptable in other highly trading countries. So we don’t have a world standard brand.

Unless we change our Farmers mind set to that of trade and markets where one has to step into the shoes of nature to provide whatever it provides free of cost, by proper and timely application of modern sciences in our processes and exchanges making it more fairer to be acceptable to our belief system, we will find it difficult to create a world standard brand.

International brands have certain charecteristics, I shall list a few of them. Those will be house hold names in most of the 204 countries of the world, they will have certain threshold revenue stream some going beyond even some countries GDP. They will be available in most of these countries &C. &C.
The brands you mention don't have these charecteristics to be included in international brands list. On the basis of WTO quota they are exported to some countries and many of those whom you mention are speciality goods which only has market among professional community like banking and other business applications, not consumers of everyday items. Their revenue streams don't match even those of small companies in developed countries, when it is converted into local currency probably it look bigger in ones own country. For example infosys has a revenue stream of around 3.5 bn dollars, which can be compared to only a small corporate or private company in US.

Who said we dont have international brands. TATA, Mahindra, Infosys, Wipro,Airtel...
I am sure more will get added to the list. We have to have faith in ourselves because basically the indian market itself is so huge that capturing that itself is enough for any brand and only then can it go international unlike the koreans or japanese where their markets have saturated and they need to go international if they have to survive.

Dear Mr Cherian,

Each segment of industry requires to be dealt with differently in approach. Limiting to farm sector as mentioned farmers living in wait for rains can not. Complete lack of infrastructure support, rising population and so on...there are several reasons. Coming to other industries the objective being to make quickest gains, consistency, corporate culture and long term perspectives kept getting lost.

Very good insight on global brands on which India is lagging to have them.
India needs to think on those lines and efforts are required to focus/concentrate on R&D with a view to develop international or global brands of India.

Thanks for the referral Mr.Mathew Cherian and it is really a good article.

Dear friend, Though the people of various Indian provinces
have long traditon, culture and values much higher than
any in the western world, the new India we have now
happened to be co-product of colonilaism that forced
the last generation Indians to remain sub-serviant to the
ideas and interests of the colonialists and their ofshoots of
the so called advanced countries.

Hence we see that though Indians contributed and continues to do so much to
the world in every sphere, and defenitely has the capability to stand on
its own and become a "Global Brand', we are still burdened from diminished
self respect inflicted on us through the centuries of slavery in one form
other, and thus inherited inconsistancy in consolidated patriotic outlook,
there is certain lack of virtues related to quality in mind and kind,
depriving India becoming the "Global Brand".

Things are changing and India will become a 'Global brand' provided,
the young generation continues to move coherently and confidently with
wisdom to get out of the shackles of the inherited drawbacks of the gone
generation and without falling prey to the power mongering politicians,
religious and regionoistic fanatics of the current generation.
