World’s largest Uranium Reserve in India?
Mr. Sri Kumar Banerjee, Secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy shared this information to media persons that after a 4-year survey by the Department of Atomic Energy, Scientists found world’s largest uranium reserves near Tummalapalli Village of Vemula Mandal in Kadappa District, Andhra Pradesh. He said the presence 49,000 tonnes of Uranium is confirmed but the actual quantity could be increased upto 1,50,000 tonnes, which could be the world’s largest reserve. The mining activity is likely to begin by January 2012.
If this reserve is proved to be the world’s largest reserve, India can easily set up 8000 MW Nuclear Power Station, which will cater to India’s energy requirement for another 40 years. In India, at present, we have two uranium mines in Jharkhand State. If we add up this new find, the country will have 1.7 lakh tones of Uranium. Our dependence on nuclear fuel from other countries, viz., Kazakhstan and France, would be gradually reduced, if the scientists scale up the mining activity in Andhra Pradesh.
