You can sell a ton of brass as gold if you have the right look.
In 21st century no-one can ignore the importance of professionalism in the work place.
Because your professional image speaks more loud than your competitiveness in your work place.
But do you carry /project a perfect professional image? Professionalism in the work place is based on many factors like how you dress, how you project yourself, how you interact & your attitude with others in the workplace.
Here are three characteristics to watch for:
Dress to success: I’ve seen issues regarding professional attire. Most violators fall into three categories. They feel that:
- Dressing badly, and thinking that no one will notice, is a sure sign that people will notice.
- Appearance is superficial and unimportant
- They don't have enough time to dress nicely.
If so then you may simply be regarded as a work horse and never be given the attention of a thorough breed.
But if you want to get noticed in the competitive market then you should adapt your professional attire so that people will respond to you and in turn give your competence the consideration it deserves.
Dress for the job you want, not the one you have. Let your attire reflect your self-respect and professionalism
Proper Body Language: Unprofessional body language creates a poor impression in the work place. Pay attention how you should behave in the work place. Here are few points to be taken care of-
- Open palms: sincerity, openness, receptivity
- Nodding: interest, agreement and understanding
- Arms crossed over chest: defensiveness, guardedness, resistance
- Clutching objects tightly: anxiety, nervous anticipation
- Tapping or drumming fingers: impatience, annoyance
- Chewing gum advertises you as unprofessional
- Be clean and fresh, but keep your fragrance to a minimum or avoid excessive & strong fragrance.
- Keep your nails trimmed and clean.Because people notice hands right after they notice faces.
- Listen more talk less
Be honest with your co-workers, but not too honest: Too much openness about professional issues leads to unprofessionalism in the workplace. So there are few principles for interpersonal relationship in the workplace
- Do not discuss your salary/wage with your coworkers
- Choose your battles wisely.
- Avoid excessive personal gossiping.
- Leave your emotional baggage behind.
Note----There is a popular & very common phrase in Hindi-“Jungle main nacha moor, to dekha kaun ?” (there is no audience for a peacock’s dance in the jungle.)So you have to advertise/project yourself.
- Create a confidential Career Profile and Resume/C.V. online
- Get advice for planning their career and for marketing of experience and skills
- Maximize awareness of and access to the best career opportunities
