Global Semiconductor Market: The global economy is entering a period of unprecedented uncertainty, driven largely by the crisis in subprime home mortgages here in the United States. The resulting credit crisis has impacted all segments of the economy. With more than half of all semiconductor demand driven by consumer purchasing, this crisis has the potential to impact semiconductor demand going forward. As the economic situation began to unfold early in the year, the SIA’s June mid-year forecast lowered the projected sequential growth rate to 4.3% and total sales of $266.6 billion. Rapid price attrition in DRAM and NAND flash products dampened overall industry growth despite healthy demand ...

Chip design in India The recent ISA-IDC report found that the total chip design market is expected to surpass $7.37 billion in 2008, with a huge chunk of revenues coming from embedded software, followed by VLSI design and hardware/board design.  Gartner states that the market for third-party chip design services in India is estimated at about $400 million. Ganesh Ramamoorthy, Principal Research Analyst, Gartner, said, “Gartner estimates that the market will grow by 26% in 2008, year-on-year. Between 2007 and 2012, we expect third-party chip design services market in India to grow at a CAGR of about 22.3%, to reach nearly $830 million by 2012.” Why India? Traditionally Taiwan has been the fa...

Digital Signal Processors   A Digital Signal Processor , or DSP, is asemiconductor device used for processing signals digitally.  A signal, inthis context, traditionally refers to an analog signal (such as analog voltage)that has been converted into a digital one so that it can be processedmathematically.  Nowadays, however, almost every piece of information hasbeen digitized, so a digital signal may be any stream of digital data - digitalaudio/video data, betting odds, or even the weight of clothes in a washingmachine.  Analysis of such digital signals for a variety of purposes canbe easily accomplished by a DSP.   Signal processingencompasses a large variety of actions performed on signal...

The future of DSP By Vivek Nanda, National Instruments Digital signal processing systems have long enabled interaction of the digital electronics world with the real, analog world. It all started with simple devices that performed sums of products in a single instruction cycle. In 1979, Intel Corp. introduced the 25bit I2920, an integer processor, and NEC came out with uPD7720, a 16bit processor with a 512-word program memory and a 128+512 data memory. By 1980, Texas Instruments had offered the TMS32010 and Fujitsu, the MB8764—both of them, 16bit programmable ICs. The DSP in those days found wide application in speech synthesis and recognition, echo cancellation, modems, disk drives and ins...

The Future of DSP By Gene Frantz, Texas Instruments Gene Frantz is one of those industry insiders who probably find it impossible to be boring. Around before the birth of the DSP chip at TI, Frantz has watched and contributed as signal processing moved from primarily an analog function to implementation in dedicated arithmetic pipelines under state-machine control to the arrival of the programmable signal-processing chip. He has been in on the further evolution of that architecture from something resembling a 16-bit microprocessor to the current VLIW-like devices with specialized arithmetic pipes, bit-manipulation hardware and address generators. So he is a good person to talk with about th...
