Depressed youngsters who do not socialise much are most likely to lash out violently at others, a new study has claimed.According to researchers at Texas A M International University, the strongest risk factors for violent behaviour were depression and having delinquent peers. Overall, the researchers found, the factors that did increase the risk of violent behaviour had pretty small effects. A lot of media attention tends to get focused on individual factors, like playing violent video games, and even when there's no evidence that they're connected with violent behaviour.

In a recent study, it was seen that the average Mumbaikar is likely to die at least seven years before other Indians and about 12 years before people living in the rest of Maharashtra. Despite economic growth and availability of good health facilities in the city, which normally lead to an increase in life expectancy in societies across the world, Mumbaikars on an average live to the age of 56.8 years. Life expectancy is 52.6 years for men and 58.1 years for women. The average all-India life expectancy figure is currently 63.7 years for both males and females. This means the average Indian's lifespan is at least seven years more than that of the average Mumbaikar. These figures came up in t...

Nanotechnology could improve the life of the lithium batteries used in portable devices, including laptop computers, mp3 players, and mobile phones. Research to be published in the Inderscience publication - International Journal of Nano manufacturing demonstrates that carbon nanotubes can prevent such batteries from losing their charge capacity over time. Researchers at the Shenyang National Laboratory for Materials Science, in China, have been investigating how to improve the kind of rechargeable batteries that are almost ubiquitous in today's portable devices. Mobile phones, mp3 players, personal digital assistants (PDAs), and laptop computers usually use lithium-ion batteries to...

India sends as many students to the US for higher studies as does China, but an analysis of immigration trends suggests this supply is worryingly skewed. While both the countries have sent a comparable number of engineering students to the US, China sent two-and-a-half times more science students than India, according to a recent study. As for the number of doctorates from US universities—a sign of the quality of students—China is way ahead of India, even in engineering studies. China’s prowess in basic sciences gives it an edge in areas such as nanotechnology, drug discovery and energy research. The findings are from the India Science and Technology Report 2008, published by the Nationa...
