When Sun Microsystems saw Second Life, it saw an opportunity for businesses to internally collaborate behind the firewall. In this Q A with one of the main project leads, CIO.com finds out how virtual worlds fit into Sun's world, and down the road, maybe everyone else's as well. During the past couple of years, virtual worlds have received a lot of media attention, especially Second Life, the virtual environment created by Linden Lab that 1.3 million people actively use to play games, do business and live alter egos via their avatar stand-ins. But when Sun Microsystems thought about how it could use a virtual world to improve internal collaboration and facilitate social interactions among i...

Imagine, if you will, a world with no Internet. No e-mail. No e-commerce. And no BlackBerrys . E-mail would be supplanted by snail mail; cell phones by land lines. Now imagine what the future would look like. Futurists say virtual business services of all sorts, accounting, payroll and even sales would come to a halt, as would many companies. This immediately made me think of E.M. Forster's disturbing tale The Machine Stops . Written in 1909, it describes the downfall of a civilization that had wrapped itself in the cocoon of an automated life-support system. But people began to think of the Machine as an infallible deity, and lived in their individual mechanical wombs, communicating and do...

Project managers must focus on three dimensions of project success. Simply put, project success means completing all project deliverables on time , within budget , and to a level of quality that is acceptable to sponsors and stakeholders. The project manager must keep the team's attention focused on achieving these broad goals. Planning is everything -- and ongoing. On one thing all PM texts and authorities agree: The single most important activity that project managers engage in is planning -- detailed, systematic, team-involved plans are the only foundation for project success. And when real-world events conspire to change the plan, project managers must make a new one to reflect the chan...

A little less than a week ago, I opened a zoomerang survey about database stored procedures. In this post, I’m presenting the results. In just a few days, the survey was visited 232 times, and no less than 155 people completed the survey! (There was a very small (2) number of people that answered some, but not all the items, and these are excluded from the results proper.) I didn’t really know what to expect, but I did not expect as much as this! So, I’m quite pleased, and I want to thank everybody that took the time to complete the survey. Thank You very, very much, I appreciate your efforts a lot! Before we Begin Before I present the results, I want to explain a few things about the surve...

What do you look for in a product or service? Price, availability, guarantees, style, reputation, brand recognition, and quality are just a few of the things that consumers look for before making a choice about an important product or service. Quality assurance can be a service or a description of how something might be delivered to you. Quality, the term is known to mean, ?top shelf,? better than average, excellence, value, or superior. Assurance is the promise, oath, declaration, word, or pledge. Together we have Quality Assurance, the promise of superiority. When you need Quality assurance for your business, you need some kind of systems in place to monitor, train and control the inform...

Technical and job-related skills are a must, Today IT is something which you cannot escape... but are these skills sufficient enough in the long run, I think they are NOT sufficient when it comes to progressing up the ladder. With the traditional paternalistic style of leadership becoming passé, professional managers expect their teams to be proactive, Fundamentaly strong and communicate openly. 'Soft skills are very important in business. It is essential to be technically sound, but one should also have the ability to convey the idea to the masses in the simplest possible manner'. With the boom in outsourcing taking root across industries, many professionals and subject matter experts dire...

This paper explores the built-in support for standard design patterns in ASP.NET, and ways in which one can implement common patterns in one's own applications. The paper discusses more advanced design patterns typically seen in Windows Forms and other desktop applications, but less often suited for implementation within web applications. However, the overall aims of these patterns - particularly the Command and Event patterns - are laudable, and it is possible to provide a useful modified implementation for ASP.NET applications. Please read the complete article in the below mentioned link------

While cloud architecture and parallel programming were the trends in 2007, Outsourcing and agile development will be the trends of software development in 2008. OUTSOURCING SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT: Outsourcing will become more prominent than before in 2008. Different time zones, different people, different culture and customs will impact software projects than ever before. Software testers abroad will relatively have less work than before because most of the work will be outsourced to India. India as ever will bloom as an outsourcing center. As the outsourcing trend continues, development organizations should retain business analysis and requirements specification as core competencies. AGI...

Outsourcing does not necessarilyy imply "off loading to a foreign country". There's lots of unused talent available here in India, that is not necessarily tied to any of the so called big business houses in India.
