Can any quantifiable value be derived from operational risk management [ORM]? The question resonates in the minds of bankers all over the world. And for good reason, with the New Basel Capital Accord [Basel II] initiative to bring order to international capital markets and level the playing field for banks becoming operational in 2007. It requires that banks thoroughly address operational risks and develop internal solutions. Banks first developed operational risk management programs to build shareholder value. The inclusion of operational risk in Basel II came later. But according to financial analysts, because operational risk is now a compliance issue, many banks are approaching it with ...

With the inclusion of Operational Risk in Basel II, ORM has assumed more significance than ever. Though the banks in India and elsewhere are approaching ORM as a compliance issue, it's nonetheless a progressive step - a step forward, in managing...

Just as King Arthur’s knights gathered around their roundtable to try and divine the future intentions of invaders and other threats to the realm, financial services and other enterprise organizations have a critical need to share information about emerging cybercrime threats and attacks. It's no surprise that financial institutions are assuming a leadership role when it comes to addressing cyber security issues and protecting customers. After all, increases in phishing incidents and other forms of online fraud are dramatically heightening consumer concerns about the safety of the Internet for conducting financial transactions. At the same time, lost and stolen data, including personally id...

The underlying aim of Basel II is to promote safety and soundness in the financial system by allocating capital in organisations to reflect risk more accurately. This can be attained only by the combination of effective bank-level management, market discipline and supervision. Basel II will impact the entire spectrum of banking, including corporate finance, retail banking, asset management, payments and settlements, commercial banking, trading and sales, retail brokerage and agency and custody services. With acceptance of Basel II worldwide, now there is a need of some IT solution that can help a company to comply with the changes made by Basel II. A lot many companies are coming up with th...

I have encountered these fees on a few occasions, and they can creep up on you if you don’t pay attention. This has come to be even more of a problem with the ability to manage almost any aspect of your bank accounts either online or via telephone, which are the types of transactions that are limited. When I worked for a bank, this was one of the top customer complaints. They would come in all upset about a fee on their 'free' account and wonder why, and in almost every instance it was simply because people were treating their savings account like a checking account. They would keep a relatively low checking balance, but then have to constantly move money from savings into checking througho...

As the business is growing beyond the borders of nation, Internationalization of the business is the process that comes into action. Firms go international to exploit and harness the benefits and resouces from other countries. In broader sense, not only firms but also the nationality that is associated with firms and companies is being processessd along with business practises. In order to get access to world economy for any company, there are two must have key features i.e International Economics and International Busiess. The approach to understand such blend of econimcs and international bussiness has been beautifully blended by 'Steven Brakman' in his recentl published book Nations and ...

Companies remain committed to ERP systems despite innovation, integration and cost issues. CIO magazine survey gave some interesting insights that primarily focused on small to mid-market companies. Survey revealed the extent to which companies in 2008 are completely married to and dependent upon their ERP systems. More than 85 percent of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that their ERP systems were essential to the core of their businesses, and that they could not live without them. CIO Magazine Survey was done on 400 IT leaders. Here are some interesting facts: Seventy percent of those responding said their businesses fell into the small and midsize category (up to $999 million in ann...

Many Companies are currently searching for an ERP solution to replace their legacy system but the selection process has proven to be a rather time consuming and expensive task. Does anyone else know about how to improve the selection cycle?
