Branding is a social phenomenon, not something that exclusively relates to marketing.
Sometime brands are established in public consciousness without any
brand marketing. Sometimes the brand image is not what the owner of the
name wants.
Bearing these points in mind, you can see brand advertising
as a risk management investment. If you don't advertise to try to
control what your brand means in the public consciousness, then it may
end up having negative connotations.
