Microsoft Corp will release three versions of its dominant Office software that users can access over the Web, catching up with products that rival Google Inc launched three years ago. There has been a war between Microsoft and Google. Google announced plans last week to challenge Windows with a free operating system. Microsoft introduced a new search engine, Bing, last month.Microsoft will offer for free to consumers Web-based versions of its Office suite of programs, including a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation software and a note-taking program. Microsoft will also host one Internet business version of Office at its own data centers, charging companies a yet-to- be-announced fee. Companies with premium service contracts will have the choice of running a second Web-based version from their own data centers at no extra cost. The company hopes to make money by using the free software to lead users to its ad-supported websites, including Bing.ill, a free version of Office could hurt sales of Microsoft's top-selling and most profitable unit. One of Office's most popular titles is a home version that sells for $150. It includes the four programs that Microsoft will give away.

From the past few day we have been seeing how Google was trying to give a tough competition to Microsoft by announcing the launch of Google operating system..Now Microsoft is also trying to hit Google back by announcing the release of office softwares which are similar to Google office softwares which they have released three years back.

How successful do you think the new office softwares launched by Microsoft will be? Will it be able to give a tough competition to Google?

A lot depends on how Microsoft markets the product and how easily accessible it becomes over the net. Given the widespread familiarity of Microsoft Office, there is a HUGE chunk of online users who will readily switchover from google spreadsheet to MS Office Online if the user interface is attractive and freely available.

But it remains to be seen how Microsoft uses this advantage to divert traffic to its search engine BING or to its other supported websites.

It would be an added advantage if Microsoft comes in with an interface which would allow offline MS ofc documents to be uploaded/ updated on to the online documents directly without any hassles.

Sumitra, what really draws attention is not which of the two will be better off, but really exciting is the way things are changing and the way it is going to affect consumers. Even adobe has entered the cloud arena with acrobat and photoshop. what all people can achieve with little investment and methods people will employ to harness and utilise productively, all that is being offered. The pace of offerings is increasing and to really absorb everything is trying. It has started to rain and how to soak it all in, is the big question.

I dont think Microsoft can look at Google alone as a competition here. IBM has Lotus Symphony, a Open source Open Office based Office suite which is free for users and Sun's Open Office which is now under Oracle and Google also throwing its hat Microsoft has threat from IBM, Oracle and Google. Three of them together can be a significant threat and what Microsoft is doing is more in response to these threat and if they have to win the race they have to get fast onto setting the rules than playing on other rules set by the competition. Till now Microsoft could afford come along once the rule is set by some one else and play along and get big to alter the rule but the same may not be possible any longer because this time around the competition is coming three of the biggest players in the business and each one would love to displace Microsoft or see it diminished. Its a great Marketing challenge for Microsoft than tech challenge as I see it.
