The whole of India is buzzing with affordable housing and all the developers are beelining for the same.    Is this really a long standing and durable.  Given the cost cutting and diluting the specification, how durable are these houses?  This may sound well now, in the time of recession, but what happens once the economy recovers and the recession is gone?  Is there still demand for affordable housing.   How it is sustained.

The affordable housing should mean that the "Price" for the House/Flat shoud be affordable to the people who can comfortably pay the Money and EMI within their means. The construction should be "Cost effective". But it should not mean "Low Cost Construction". Both of them are different. If for reducing the cost, if we dilute the specifications, then there is problem. If proper Value engineering is done for each item of work in the building and cost effective specifications are provided, then it may be possible that a cost effective construction and affordable housing can be achieved.

affordable housing as per my perception is : housing with optimum space, budget, social location, and specification for a family for which the housing is done/proposed. If this defination is followed then it is to my knowledge affordable housing and will be a great success in the future also.

Definately low cost housing will stay for long time , here prices are not for construction , we pay price for land , there is so many ways of making a low cost houses. it will continue even after recestion, because so many lower middle class people want bye a flat, because of the high pricing thire dreams always stay as dream, finaly there is the chance for them to bye their own dream house. they may thank who ever come with this idea of low cost houses

I do agree with Srinivas on the affordable = Cost effective and not Low cost houses. If developers can ensure that the Specification / space is not diluted then AFFORDABLE HOMES will become succesful, no matter whether in recession or out of recession.

Yes this should be the buzzword right now as this affordable and mass housing are gaining importance these days and agree with srinivas also, as it should not be the case where it is compromised with the quality of the product...then it is the case where new type of practice is applied where right amount of materials is used and not wasted..so proper forecasting should be done before itself as the materials rate will be changing time and again..and this will happen if the Banks are also providing loans at affordable rates...if not this will face problems as nowadays it is hard to get loans also....
