These are the very frequently talked about terms in the field of biotechnology. They are most recent developments in this field but how do they actually help in drug discovery is unknown to most of us. Do they really add some value to the process?
Today we know, life is specified by genome and genome is specified by DNA. Thus, with complete genomic information using reverse vaccinology a new novel gene can be identified which might be the potential to cause disease. Using Genomics and Bioinformatics analysis between disease causing and not causing, we can identify the potential gene responsible for causing disease. As we also know protein is the product derived from gene. Thus, proteomics analysis could further helps in drug discovery.
The genomic and proteomic technologies do have great value and helps to fasten the procedure of drug discovery. These tools will help incompare and analyse the various signal transduction mechanisms, gene expression profiles i.e, the genes which are upregulated or down regulated in disease and normal condition. So that one can target the upregulated gene products are supplement the down regulated gene products by studying the various protein - protein interactions in different environments. Apart from drug discovery it has huge value in vaccine research also.
I came across a recent article which illustrated the role of mass spectrometry-based
proteomics as an indispensable tool for molecular and cellular biology. These include the study
of protein-protein interactions via affinity-based isolations on a
small and proteome-wide scale, the mapping of numerous organelles and
the generation of quantitative protein profiles from diverse species. Development of protein profile is an important step in drug development and therefore helps in drug discovery.
I agree to Kaushik and Anil, the main apllication of proteonomics is in tracking. It does add value to drug discovery becuase now you know at which point the drug is not efficient or what changes are required. Earlier it was a trial and error method which took a longer time but genomics and proteonomics makes it very specific.
