A government commissioned survey has found that more than 53% of children in India are subjected to sexual abuse, but most don't report the assaults to anyone. The survey, covered different forms of child abuse — physical, sexual and emotional — as well as female child neglect, found that two out of every three children have been physically abused.

The study has pinned the age of minors at 18 and below. But the figure is stunning and thought provoking, The figures are nightmarish because the crowd in the survey is the future India which we keep proclaiming to be the next super-power in waiting. The consequence of the report is going to be an India having more than half its population which may have been traumatized and permanently scarred by a terrible incident in their tender age.

Should this be any less urgent matter for our consideration than corruption, center state relationship or the health of Aishwarya Rai's baby. Don't we as a nation be a little more focused on a matter of such grievous problem.

Heartening to see such a moment on a very important topic like this. Got to congratulate vinoy for bringing up this debate though I am surprised not to see any posts from him on this in recent times. Also appeal to all my fellow Toostepians to push this topic further as I feel it is a very important issue for a society that is unaware of the same. Hope to see more on this from friends on Toostep.

The attitude of certain people are really worrying. They pretend a problem does not exist and hope that the problem will vanish in the time being. Misuse of minors is one such issue among Indians. It is really reflecting badly on us as individuals and as a community.

Thank you shameena. As usual your referrals are thought provocative. But needless to say that awareness is increasing and now children are also being given advice of what to do in that case

Shameena ji thanks for the referral. Whether it is 53% or 78% makes no difference. It is an equally important subject like corruption. A person can abuse and corrupt a police officer. Once we weed out corruption, all other evils will reduce to a lesser extent. The feeling that "I can manage" must leave our minds. Then only we can see golden India !! Suvarna bharat !!!

Where all people live in dignity irrespective of caste, creed, religion and financial status !!! Youngsters like you must lead from the front, instead of sitting in a/c chambers...

The number of 53% really surprised me. If there is any truth then it is frightening to think of it. I guess this is what is likely to happen in a society like India where we are not forthcoming with the truth very easily. We need to focus our attention on this issue very importantly because if the figures are any true; what it means is over 50% of tomorrow's India is likely to stand the danger of being disturbed.

Well said and the answer is an obvious yes ! More so with close relatives being the offenders in most cases. I feel child sexual abuse should be a chapter in moral science lessons in school and should be made compulsory for everyone to attend and pass. At least then the victims of such cases will be bold enough to speak out or resist the improper advances of relatives or strangers. It is better to try and educate potential victims than would be abusers.
