The hot debates are on all over the world for a better efficient and sustainably developed world. The world leaders are either clamming that they are making a sustainable development and some are just blaming....as we all humans do....but is all these hot debates and every step that we claim for sustainable development are leading us towards sustainable development. You must be thinking why i have aroused this question....isnt it...??? I will show you some examples. And that also of India(WHY TO GO OUTSIDE INDIA).....

We very well know about the dream project of our Government"The Golden Quadrilateral". The thinking and implementation is towards joining all four sides of the country by an express way so that everyone can reach there destination as soon as possible. This project claims to allow all vehicles to run with a speed of atleast 80 to 100 km/h so that they reach their destination comfortably and in very less time.....But do you know.....

1. A moving car dissipates energy(in air swirling & breaking) at a rate proportional to the cube of the velocity. A driver who halves his average velocity reduces the dissipated energy by a factor of eight. It follows than an expressway that invites motorists to drive fast results in greater fuel consumption & problems of foreign exchange for the national economy. This directly conveys that a expressway regardless of achieving speed is boosting more consumption of fuel and great exhaust emissions...

2. The energy cost of building a reinforced concrete road is 7600 kWh/metre; if maintenance over a 40 years lifecycle is included, that estimate rises to 35000kWh/metre. If we so desire, we can compute the embodied energy of the Golden Quadrilateral linking the four corners of the country.

So tell me are we really progressing towards energy efficient and sustainably developed world....???

Last but not the least, to give an idea of where the automobilization of the economy takes a society, Stobaugh & Yergin (1979) in one of the earliest and most comprehensive energy studies of the US economy, have noted: "One out of every five workers in teh United States is involved in teh manufacture, distribution, servicing or commercial use of vehicles. In other words, the future of the American economy is intimately involved with the future of the car". That study has an entire chapter on energy wars. Half ro more of the peak oil/ peak energy analyses written by expert energy analysts, have explicitly considered the dangers of war in connection with the addiction to oil. If, as a matter of policy, automobilization is pursued further, then we should simultaneously consider allocating moe resources to the future conduct of wars.....as a matter of policy..!!!!

So, now please think deeply on this and accordingly give the answer....i would really be happy if i get good response for this as this thing has to got highlighted and thought of....

Dear Mr Gokhale:

You have raised very pertinent questions, issues & points  ... They need careful and sensible analysis to answer ...

We are not really developing towards an energy conserving, energy efficient and sustainably developed world! Our understanding and efforts are half-hearted & haphazard/haywire and along with lack of scientific unity/creditability, there is no political will and public awareness/support (or mass movement) ...

The major issue is population of any/every kind including people and automobiles etc... I, for one always felt intuitively that age of automobiles is over ... People have to take up mass transit system & travel collectively except the top brass/management; the office network/complex has to shift towards working from home in rural and/or suburban locations so that concentration of people do not happen in crowded city locations through wireless - communication - networking - which is already in place;

People have to switch to bicycles for short distance and fueling of automobiles or mass transit vehicles (like overhead or underground bullet trains, electric-buses, trams - cars etc. have to be powered by solar/electric and or hydrogen and similar other bio-fuel options and all this will take time as research-development is way behind at least in India where R&D investment is meager (3-5% compared to US's above 20%) and bright - creative talent is pushed down  / behind instead of nurturing by caste & community factors etc.

To succeed in sustainability requires the energy and the endurance to deal with "long emergencies" like climate change due to various environmental degradations/global warming-ozone depletion, acid-rains / forest depletion, forest - fires, overpopulation and organizational stress and under-capacity. And the entire present efforts is not rooted in a consistent and coherent larger framework, sometimes called the big picture.

Renewable energy (Solar, Wind, Bio-mass/fuels, wave, hydropower, any potential waste kinetic energy can be tapped as in road bumpers or any vertical-linear movement or falls etc.) is the sector that gets the most attention when we talk about a sustainable economy, but it is not the only one likely to grow. Civil engineering, conservation and efficiency technologies, mass transit and the manufacturing technologies that support it, local agriculture, design and manufacturing for durability, and distributed health care services are a few of the sectors that could show dramatic job growth in a sustainable economy. (So sustainable economy/development does produce good business and jobs opportunity)

A sustainable, non-material-intensive, non-energy-intensive economy is a radically different model than we have, or that many of us can imagine. It would mean the loss of vast numbers of jobs, in trucking, mining, highway construction, and others that sustain the current model.

For people to accept this, much less welcome it, they would have to first see offsetting increases in jobs that provide equal or better real incomes. In other words, the positive vision, and the business opportunities that a sustainable economy offers are very real, but it will be a lot harder to achieve and cause a lot more disruption by self-interest-  groups, than most of its advocates may realize ... unless organized by/under a pragmatic and wise scientific and political leadership! More later and I will be happy to continue ...

Mr. Praveen Verma....let me clear u that i am talking on the general development and just not on Pune-Mumbai expressway.....

Second thing as u want to convey that expressways are good everywhere then according to ur example the whole golden quadrilateral doesnt come under hill regions....Instead of making new expressways, cant we just upgrade our existing old highways...By doing this we conserve man, material and money....most important are the resources...and u r just concentrating on Pune-mumbai expressway...Pls give ur thought at national level....

I make my point more clearer to u now....have seen the National highway passing near to Pench National park in Madhya Pradesh...m talking about the existing old one....The high way is good but it just needs to get broaden...thats all..Now the thing is this golden quadrilateral is passing through this National park....and they are proposing a flyover through national nark...now is this not nuts and a wastage of time, money and resources...instead they can just upgrade the old highway and connect the expressway to that....

According to your example it was must to have a straight highway...but that is pune-mumbai highway...one of the most dangerous highways and that because of it passes through tough ghats of western ghats.....but wht about gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and many more states who are having plain terrains and not a single ghat comes during travelling....

Now please reveiw your thought and reply....i m waiting for ur precious thinking.... But pls think globally...Again i want to highlight that in my answer...Golden Quadrilateral was just a example out of a huge heap of examples....So pls think on National level and then answer my question...Ok buddy...thanks for giving your valuable thoughts....Good Day....

Hi,

Mr Gokhale, as I understood there are two points in your post i.e. one about road network and second about automobilization.

I fully disagree with your comments on road network because of following reasons:

1. The good road conditions not only increases the speed of the vehicles but also helps in saving the fuel. The excellent example is Mumbai Pune Express way. I have travelled on old road and express way both. The express way is around 20-25 kms shorter then the old route that too without any ghat section. So with this we are saving lot of money on fuel cost.

2. I remember the days when I used to travel from Mumbai to Pune on old road. This was taking around 4-5 hours to reach to Mumbai i.e. 4-5 kms for 200 kms. So the average speed was around 40 km/hour. So here we were running our cars / vehicles at a speed which is lower then the speed on which we get maximum fuel economy i.e 60 km/hour. So again there was a fuel loss.

3. Due to bad road conditions there was lot of accidents on the old road and many people have lost the life on this road. This cant be quantify in terms of any saving as human life is precious.

4. The damages to the vehicle was more on the old road due to bad road condition. This indirectly links to the national waste as the spare parts needs replacement. Other then the national waste of natural resources there was energy loss for manufacturing these items. One can argue that this gives the boost to GDP and employment, but I dont accept this because I feel that such contribution in GDP is a wasteful contribution.

5. Due to bad road condition the cost of transportation is high. This effects the inflation of the country as most of our stuff transported through road network.

So in all the way the good road network is a key to success. With regards to the all type of energy losses you have mentioned in your post, I would like to inform you these are one time investment but when we will compare to all the gains then these losses are very small.

However I agree with your point on the automobilization. This needs to be reduced. To my mind to some extent it linked to the road network again. If the roads are good then people wont mind travelling in the Bus.

Regards

Praveen varma

well, as far as indians are considered, we are not at all a good energy managers. The examples can be seen in our daily life, at homes , in the streets -- street lights still turned on , in the broad daylight, IN THE OFFICES AIR CONDITIONING UNITS RUNNING AT FULL LOADS.

WHERIN OTHER PARTS FACING ACUTE SHORTAGE OF POWER. THE WORST COMES IN SUMMER WHEN THE LOAD SHEDDING IS FOR HOURS.

THE FIRST STEP OF ENERGY CONSERVATION HAS TO BE TAKEN FROM INDIVIDUAL LEVEL AND THEN IT SHOULD BE MADE A NATIONAL ISSUE.

Yes Mr.Gokhale I agree with your point.People should realise the importance of consuming less energy and instead of travelling with their own vehicle..they should take the services of public transport...To encourage this the government and the people themselves should take the initiative and promote this idea......By the way I did not mean that you were against country's development......

Mr. Vineet prakash i m not against country's development....n also not against Golden Quadrilateral project...i just wanted to highlight that how much energy are we consuming in such development whose future we dont know will exist or not. What is the certainity that a better efficient fuel car or vehicle will be launched that can run on this expressways for a longtime. For e.g. Now-a-days we are talking about introducing electric cars in market...But wht will be there efficiency...will they be able to cross the whole length...This cars cant even complete the distance from delhi to mumbai....Now you talking of energy efficient automobiles....tell me wht u think....by wht time or within how many years these automobiles can be introduced....there is no answer because the job is of automobile industries and they are not doing tht due to their personal interest... Now we have to think of some output which is quick and easy to implement. For these we have to take certain strong steps like boosting mass transports.....this is one of the best solutions....If we introduce more n more buses/ public transport and provide a frequent and efficient service then no private vehicle is needed during travelling....y people prefer private instead of public transport....

Such solutions will be more accurate and fruitfull for tackling the energy problem...

As of ur saying that we should create more efficient automobiles....then wht is the need for introducing more new models in market and increasing the pressure of fuel availability...Just think in a single bus atleast 60 persons can travel easily (equivalent to 15 cars)....just imagine how many car will be replaced by these mass transport....all roads will be clear and no traffic jams...there will be no need of more developing roads and broadening them....

So now u tell me is there any requirement for such development....????????

Mr.Gokhale this is a good question that you have asked and it's very difficult to say whether are we really taking any initiative to conserve energy and for a healthy and sustainable environment.....But the point that you are talking about here is  whether "The Golden Quadrilateral" project that the government is thinking of implementing should go ahead or not seeing the negatives that are related to it which you have mentioned......But don't you think so that  this expressway connecting all parts of the country will be so convenient for all the commuters and instead of seeing the amount of energy which is consumed and other factors...we should be focussing on developing energy efficient automobiles which will consume less energy and benefit the environment....We should think of finding solutions as to how we can contribute in saving energy and make world a better place to live in instead of halting the development of the country.
