This is a two part question for all the HR/Hiring Managers. On an average, for each open position: 1) How many qualified resumes do you usually like to go through? 2) How many interviews do you usually like to conduct? I do understand that this can vary a great deal. Sometimes the first resume received turns into a hire; there are also times when the process can go on and on until you find a suitable candidate. What I am trying to get out of this question is, an average that will make you feel satisfied with your recruitment process and make you say, "Ok, so we went through X number qualified resumes for this position, interviewed Y candidates and found the person that we wanted. This was efficient utilization of our time and funds invested. Anything more than these numbers will require us to give special attention, to improve our processes." Thank you in advance for your input! Regards, Om Deshpande

As a recruitment company, our policy is to send between 3 and 5 fully assessed candidates per vacancy. In our experience, this is the optimum number.
If a client wants "more, more, more" it is likely that they are not clear on what they are looking for. With a well thought out recruitment plan, the successful HR Manager will accept that there will not be more than 3 - 5 candidates that meet his/her criteria.
The key is to properly think through what is required in experience, skills, motivation and personality. Of course, a professional recruiter will screen and assess in order to produce this short list. Doing it independently may require 20+ interviews!
