dear friends getting nick names for your regional identity is ok but when it is notational about your religion it is not like a nickname anymore it is like an abusive language rather.saying 'kandhu' for hindus or 'katua' for muslims are an abusive language not nick names.yes no doubt india is a family but you can call anyone in your family like 'chhotu' or 'moti' but not 'kaminey' or as much flirthy as you can think.andif may be some family allows these kinds of words it wont be a dignified family as our india.so kindly dont malign my india.

i think sheetal has done a great job as a real indian we should react or rather support this relevant and important issue

We human beings are marked by sensitivity. The answer to this question is as simple as a child's reaction to being called "e motu". Humans can always sense the feelings behind the words. Being called "e motu" by a close one can bring a smile to a child's face at the same time the same words can also bring tears.

So it doesn't matter whether your called a Bihari, a Bengali, a gujarati or a Muslim what matters how your called a Bihari, a Bengali, A gujarati or a Muslim. The feelings behind the words.

If what Raj Thackeray is doing against North Indians is what you term as just keeping "nick names", then you definitely are way too "sportive". Using regionalism as a way to unite is different than using it as a way to discriminate, and to keep our souls alive we need to know the difference.....at the same time keeping in mind the need of the times we also need to practise a lot more tolerance.....Peace isn't too far away then...

You have asked a very nice question Sheetal. But what I believe is answer to his question is very simple. "It depends upon the sence in which you are calling". Nowadays, it has become a fashion to give regional names as nick names like "gujju" for gujratis, "mallus" for malyalis, "Bongs" for Bengalis, "Ure" for oriyas, "Aasu" for asamese or "Panjus" for panjabis. Even people of these states represent themselves with these words. Even when it comes to religion, it depends upon the sense in which it is being said. Like, I have many Sikh friends whom I call as "Oye sardar"!!! They never take it in a wrong way since they know Iam not using it to insult or hurt them. Among the college boys, even best friends specially in North India, calling each other by "kaminey" or "Saale" is very common.(If you go to Delhi or Mumbai you can see these things). Nobody minds since the speaker is not saying in a bad sense. But yes, when they are said to intentionally abuse, it is wrong...

To me it seems we are getting 2 points. We often call people who are not from bihar also bihari, because "bihari" most of us interpret as someone who is foolish. So yes in that context we are actually making fun of the name, else calling someone "marathi" or "rajasthani" is often used in humor sense which i suppose is fine.

What to fight/discuss for cast ism ,racism, religion, area country etc,all have come from the earth and will again go to the earth( mati) .this fact is known to every one that this body is made of water, earth(soil)(mitti),fire, air(samir)ND SKY(GAGAN)means five elements(tatva's).

What is there in keeping names also, area wise, religion wise etc we should have our name also in such way that it doesn't show area ,cast, religion etc

THIS WILL SOLVE ALL THE PROBLEMS.

If you don't understand the difference between CASTISM and RACISM--that is a severe problem I would say..no one can help you.

As far as calling Biharis as Biharis--I would say in India we call every state person by their native place name sometimes--I don't mind someone calling me Bengali.

As far as calling muslims something is concerned...You should also apply your radious od knowledge and find out what Muslims call Hindus.

Anyways in the end the purpose for me to tell you all this is...we need to decide "first improving oneself and then to change others" this theory ever worked ? Or the race that change others are ultimately hailed by others...

Have to take lessons from History---see British..Americans...Se Australians...See Chineese...they never try to find their faults but they don't hasitate to oppress others....You have to choose you want to be in race with them or you want to keep on criticising your own people...

Hope you will find the answer.

The practice of calling people by their caste or region exists. That is one way of communications. Marathis are refered as Ghatis. In Maharashtra, UP origin people are fondly called "Bhaiya". No insult is intended in it. All south Indians are refered as "Madrasi" in north India. This is just way of identifying the group of people. People use this practice, without knowing that, this is called racism. Call it racism, or whatever U want.....

What follows in Australia, is systematically attackng the people, harming them physically, either knowing that they are soft targets (for looting) or for scaring them away from Australia. Practicing racism like this, is different than calling people by names, as in India.

And using the practice of racism as followed in India, to justify the attacks in Australia is not going to solve any problem
