Being rich in agricultural prodects, indian economy mostly depends on agriproducts, as 70% of her's population living in rural areas, the constraint that comes to my mind is that, share of oter sectors in indian economy is not that vittal but india as country need to shift its dependebility on other sectors of economy, as agriculture in india is mostly based on monsoon, also the framers in our country are not having enough resources, therefore will it be possible for indian econmy to think beyond agriculture?................
Dear Nagpal,
I feel Indian companies should stop over-focussing on strategy and start working on plans for future growth. If India wishes to become a leader by 2050, it must start work now itself and companies should invest in people in terms of learning and development. Still I feel the agriculture needs are unmet & should get primacy. One should learn form ITC’s e-choupal initiative which has transformed the traditional way of agricultural crop marketing.
And I believe the traditional Indian hierarchical system needs to be changed and ideas of every employee like this site has to be exploited in order to foster innovation at every level of the management ladder. I am happy that I am part of this site where I can share my ideas with experts & professionals from varied industries.....
you must refer to latest statistics we are having just about 17% of our economy depended on agriculture.the entire argument is wasted energy because you are assuming 70 of our gdp comes from agriculture.it is around 17%.
may be 70% of our people stay in rural sector.that does not mean 70% of our economy.
Agriculture..........should be the prime ECONOMY in future.....Because everybody needs affordable food.........other sectors shall go along with agriculture..........if we fail to understand the importance of self sufficiency in agriculture ....INDIA can be next SOMALIA.......Lack of affordable food will result in .....civil unrest....and total collapse of the country.......Agriculture shall be PRIME ECONOMY....
It is rightly said that the path to ones mind is through his stomach.
Whatever said and done it is impossible to provide white collar jobs to every one in the rural villages. Jobs in farming and agriculture is the only way to keep the people in healthy enviornment in the villages without going crowding the cities and living in horrible slums.
There is nothing more important than locally producing enough food in a country of such enormous population. For this, focus shall be on alround reforms in agriculture. Basically almost all provinces of India depends on Monsoon for agriculture. If there is enough monsoon, our economy booms.
Fortunately, India has enough arable land, and more area could be made cultivable by enhanced water irrigation. Every year we have situation of draught and flood at one part or other at the same time. Monsoon cause flood and entire water is wasted away into the sea in the end. We do not have enough reservoirs to store it for the lean period.
The solutions are linkage of rivers, and other methods of rain water harnessing, to make more area cultivable. After seeing Netherlands, I had given a proposal to build reservoirs at the river mouths by constructing ledges in the sea like in Holland. Typical example is about a project in the sea between Surat and Bhavnagar which can also use for road and railway reducing the distance to one third. Having done this, sweet water discharge from the river will push the sea water out and we have a very big reservoir which can tke care of the need of entire northwest part of the country. Water from the reservoirs can be distributed to inland with canals built for that. Wind mills can be used effectively for lifting the water from reservoir to canals and at various points of distribution to maintain the water head. There are many river mouths where such projects could be implemented.
Along with it advance technology and other agricultural reforms shall be implemented. Efforts are required in the area of research to provide high produce and insect resistant seeds and right type of fertilizers and insecticides.
Co-operative farming and mechanisation would help to increase produce and to fetch right price to the farmers. There shall be proper distribution and storage system and well organised channel for export of food and agricultural products.
There shall be special co-operative banks in every district to give financial support in terms of cheap loans and Insurance companies to guard against crop failures due to natural calamities. Then there need be no more wrtting off of agricultural loans which is a crime against the tax payers.
But who hears all these. Politicians have no time except fighting each other, the Bureaucrats get their pay wether do any work or not. We had a visonary Presient whom the politicians pushed out of the system instead of using him for another term. In spite of all this people of India will have enough relsient to whethear all and grow amy be at a slower pace, thanks to the politicians.
Despite being underdeveloped India was the first country to start deregulating doing jusitce to fully let it's citizen to swindle each other for a daily living.
1)They repealed 'contract laws' in 1973 so that a word is not a word any more in any transaction in India and it forfeiths 'near foreseeability' or cheats on 'revealed preferences'.
2)No property rights for citizen which was also repealed along with contract laws allowing government to foreclose anyones property without paying adequate compensation.
3)National income denominated in GDP not GNP to create sloth and slumber to the manufacturing class that they need not have to export their products. GNP has a component (xport - import) which if taken as the denominator then will make our inefficiency in producing quality goods and sevices visible to others.
4)WPI taken as the index of inflation rather than CPI so that real state of the price movements useful for the citizen won't be visible to them.
These are few of the things that come ot our mind when we look at how transparent we are in public administration.
Someone wrote about digitizing governemnt processes. Unless we change our mind set in things like above nothing can make things better in the short run. May be in the long.
I think, as a strategic decision, India should capitalise on it's inherent strength and build agriculture as it's strength point.
The country, which produces food more than it's intake, will increase it's viability in the world. It will be a positive contributor to the food balance. In order to strengthen agriculture base, India should-
- adopt science & technology to optimize agriculture productivity.
- establish a communication channel, so that latest technology & advice is available to farmers in the language they understand.
- reduce dependence on monsoon, by schemes like "river garlanding".
- adopt latest practices & infrastructure for food preservation. (As per present statistics, 5-10% food gets perished due to poor storage facilities).
A platform provided by strong agri base, may facilitate growth in other sector. It is also worth noting that, industrial growyh also depends on agri growth in some sectors (food processing, agriculture equipment, etc..).
In reverse strategy, India may face situation that, earnings of other sectors may have to be spent to purchase grains..
India has already amply proved that it is a technological nation and multi faceted in its Gross Domestic Product. The software story is well known and our target is USD 50 Billion in revenue.Next textile exports which peaked in excess of Rs.10,000 crores.Followed by Indian man power industry which is remitting to India in excess of USD 20 Billion p.a. Take our retail segment, which attracts foreign investment which only proves such investments will give an attractive return to the investor. Our automobile industry is churning out models for foreign markets and we probably have the largest pool of engineers.
Lastly what about our Rocket Science and Nuclear Power ? We are in the exclusive club of a few in the comity of nations. Now lookat the IPL magic. I am sure South Africa has gained substantially by hosting it in their country and earned substantial revenues in terms of tourism, media etc.
THIS IS THE GROWING INDIAN POWER AND DYNAMISM.
As India is an agriculture-based country, She should focus and specialize in agro-products. this is the area where she has the specialization and scope of diversifying economy to minimize risks. Though a large part of India depends on the Monsoon for a good output, there are new farm mechanisms to overcome the factor and with goverment helps (through policy, credit facilities and other infrastructural provisions) Indian farmers can really make "India Shining"
AGRICULTURE IS THE PRIME COMPONENT OF INDIAN ECONOMY BUT WITH THE PASSAGE OF TIME THE OLD PROFESSIONS ARE COMING TO THE FORE.
