Do they really help ?
Thats perhaps one of the most toughest questions. But views may differ from people to people. But if you would ask me to give the answer in a single line I would say "These certifications are not having that much worth in the market as they deserve to be".
Taking the example of SUN certifications we know every second guy in this domain is SCJP certified. So we have plethora of SCJP certified professional around us.So that obviously degrades the value of this certification but if we go beyond this certification the scenario is almost opposite. How many guys around us are say SCBCD,SCDJWS or SCEA certified.I would say negligible. There is such a scarcity of these certified people that industry doesnt even look for them.Infact I have seen many recruiters who dont even know what all these certifications(except SCJP) are all about. For example when I gave my last interview in Huawei tech the guy asked me "Hey dude what is SCWCD etc....what is it all about......and who conducts them".Ahhh I was increasing his general knowledge.
But ya he was very impressed by my certification list.It was like impressing an illiterate by talking in english with him :).Anyways based on my experience of giving SUN certifications I have developed some statistics which will show what % of certified people goes for a particular SUN certification.Say if in a particular timespan there are 1000 SCJPcertified persons than following will be the most likely distribution:
Certification name Number of certified guys
SCJP 1000
SCJA 10
SCWCD 310
SCBCD 120
SCDJWS 30
SCEA 150
And if we consider all the companies who provide all these certifications I would say MICROSOFT is the biggest hit followed by ORACLE and CISCO in terms of number of people giving their certifications. Say within a particular time frame 1000 guys went for MICROSOFT CERTIFICATION,than how many went for others:
CERTIFICATIONS NAME Number of guys going for it
MICROSOFT 1000
CISCO 250
ORACLE 225
SUN 212
IBM 125
SAS 85
COMPTIA 70
HP 33
LPI 30
TERADATA 26
SYBASE 24
VMWARE 23
LOTUS 21
JUNIPER 20
CITRIX 19
RED HAT 18
CHECKPOINT 13
NORTEL 12
SYMANTEC 12
TIBCO 10
NOVELL 10
NOKIA 9
DELL 6
APPLE 4
Surprised to see so many certifications na.Ya its a business now.Certifications are the way of generating huge revenues.Even I was surprised when I saw even APPLE and DELL conducts certifications.I wonder what would be APPLE certification all about.May be listening to itunes on ipod :)
while trying to edit i click on delete , my last answer it got deleted.
now i have edited it.......
cheers..............
Hi Sriman
Certification plays a crucial role in one career's, and it very important when we are starting as it gives the jump start, confidence and positive outlook for the domain, product, technology, process, quality, testing, project management for which you are certified.
Certification leads to quicker growth, if you are able to utilize the same in right way and put the certification visibility across to customers, management.
Certification gives instant peer respect when u are in US, EMEA and also now in India.
This does not been just do left and right certification, it should be in your vision were u want be every 12-18 months and based on that you need to do the research , which one is the best and go for the same.
Personally am big fan of certification, and it have able to put my career in fast track.
Certification helps to do business. The less someone knows about the certificate, the more impressed they are with it.
For instance, for a company to become Microsoft Certified partner, you need to have someone with a certification and have done some implementation (at elast 3), does that mean that the company delivers or is able to produce adequate support when needed? Not in the least.
If someone applies for a job, certification alone will not impress. Certain assesments, past projects and experience are far more important.
On the upside, certification will usually help you to start at a higher salary.
Hi,
Certification is important. Yeah its correct that if you have certification of any particular subject / course that doesn’t mean you are a master of that......you can become master only after having experience of that respective field.
But if you have certification you would be having knowledge of that and it would help you in when you really work on it in real.
Secondly, without certification you will not get entry in your field. Because there is a criterion for everything and if you want to join any particular department you should have knowledge of that so that company can trust on you.
So, Certification does matter and is helpful and important.
Regards,
Rohini.
As far as certifications concerned,
They are looked at seriously by non Indians.
These people might be clients of services company or any services company, but the tagline is: They are to be non Indians(Americans).
If you have good sertifications, You would be getting the value in rest of the world but, they are not as valuable in India as US, unless this is client's requirement.
There would be few basic certifications which are always valuable(At least till date) like SAP certification or certification like PMP(Project management process) or like Oracle ERP certifications which are relatively costly ones.
Good luck.
My belief is certifications are certificates,Doing a certification doesnot mean you have gained all the knowledge.Experince and the passion you put in learning is also certification. Its very easy to put a certification in ur resume and say i have done it,but have you practiced it?
For me certifications are just paper, the more you learn ,practice, improvise, impliment, yor grow.So now its ur decesion.
I very well comply with Ravi because I am from the same boat. Every now and then I get rejected by recruiters stating that you don't have a fancy degree to boast off. I am a simple arts grad. Have seen lot of unworthy people in fat jobs just because of their "So Called degrees" and not because of their caliber or capability.
But getting certified also is not a easy job for the simple reason that the cost involved for a recognized certification can blow a roof top like for example SAP/Oracle certification from parent companies. But it all depends on what exactly are you planning to take up in your career parth.
