Traffic jams in most of the cities and towns in India is a routine affair. No town and city is exception to it including the metros. The road side shops, malls, roadside prayer halls, temples and mosques, in sufficient roads, failure to build alternative roads, etc. are some of the contributing factors. Successive Govts. are failing to recognize the importance of providing infrastructural facilities. Can we find answer to this problem.

There are multiples ways to find answer to traffic jams Mr. Srinivas.

1)  Self-Regulation - As far as possible use public transport; use cycle or walk down to go to nearby shopping malls, worship place, kirana stores, etc, rather than taking four wheelers.

2)  Regulate Traffic effectively - The main cause of traffic jam happens when the automatic signal fails during peak hours when manual intervention is warranted!  Most of the time, our traffic constables are insensitive to the mad rush,  could hardly do anything in such circumstances.

3)  We should go for advanced traffic automatic intelligent signalling system that should regulate signals based on the volume of traffic, and not on the rudimentary relay mechanism (time controlled).

4)  Car pooling is the ideal way if the office goers from a particular locality decides to reach a common destination.  In Delhi, apart from Public Transport system, we have a Chartered Bus Service which cater to the Office goers (both in the morning and evening) for various routes.

5) Increase frequency of bus and train service.

6) Disallow heavy trucks within the city limits during morning and evening hours.  This restriction is there, but are relaxed for many for monetary consideration.

7)  We have excellent system in place, but we lack discipline to enforce them.  If we obey traffic rules, congestion on roads would be avoided.   Errands should be punished then and there, and for more over their license should be barred  for six months if they were caught crossing red lights for more than six times in three months time.  (hypothetical).

8) Mobike riders and autos on road should be forced to  follow lanes.  More and more sensitization of traffic rules should be done in schools, colleges, etc.  through NSS.

9) Provide shopping place for the street hawkers, so that they will not clutter the pavements and the road sides.

When you let all the automobile companies to sell their cars without any restriction on selling cars than we have a problem. Earlier, a home had only one car now some families have a car for their servant to go shopping. Imagine that!Roads are not widening up but vehicles are increasing on a daily basis so, where is the space?
It has become difficult to walk on the road these days as the condition of roads are pathetic and to add more woos some big companies have launched super-bikes into the market. It is a clear bait for young students and workers who are lured to buy this expensive cc bikes.
What happens now is accidents and deaths. ( Another hidden agenda of the Government to de-populate India).

If you refer the TOI of 21-02-2012, there is an article on this subject.  Chalta Hai attitude is the killer attitude.  We as citizens of India need to think differently.  We need a disciplined behaviour on roads.  Pedestrians and the vehicle drivers lacks discipline.  We feel proud in flouting the traffic rules.  Police are equally responsible.  Their monitoring system of traffic needs a total revamp.  They are there for correcting the traffic, but they are utilising their powers for collection.  They go on change the rules according to the whims and missing the rationale thus allowing the people to flout the set rules.  Even without a single traffic police constable on the road, the traffic can be monitored by utilising the technology. Penalty system needs a total change.  Frequent flouters driving licences shall be suspended for a certain period.  Habitual flouters shall be given a social punishment. First of all Police need a scientific approach for traffic controlling.

Thank you Mr Srinivas,

A young democracy has/had all the requisites of turning itself into an example for the world to emulate, but for the excessive unending count of self before nation beneficiaries.

Thank you Mr. Sharma once again for your insight.  You are talking about what our leaders lack.  They dont have vision, they dont have commitment and more important they are lethargic about the needs of the people and the nation at large.

" We surely can" and is surprisingly simple to achieve, To achieve the following is required:

Disciplined performing leadership that can take requisite care of greedy land sharks, sundry squatters, poor planners, rank bad road makers and corrupt traffic managers and road riders.
