Happiness is like melting ice and sadness is like raising fire.
Happiness is inward, and not outward; and so, it does not depend on what we have, but on what we are.
Sadness is outward, and not inward; and so, it does not depend upon what we are, but on what we have.

One of the Buddha’s most profound sayings is “Nothing is Permanent“. The Buddha observed this in all facets of life – the fact that everything changes, nothing lasts forever, or for merely more than a moment.
What we can learn from the saying? One thing for me is understanding that anything we might try to hold on to may be gone or changed in just a moment’s notice. So I think we should carefully watch the attachment we have to the happiness or satisfaction we get from certain objects, or from a relationship or even from a state of being we might be in.
Even our own personal lives will eventually come to an end. I think that understanding this can help to just live in the present moment. Without attachment to what has gone on in the past, and without trying to expect too much from our future existence. One never knows where our current path will lead. So what we can do is just observe what is happening right now, from moment to moment.
This also helps those who may be going through any state of suffering. That the suffering will eventually pass, too, because it is also impermanent as is everything else. It can be a hopeful message in times of turmoil or sadness.
If we can reach a state of detachment from things and expectation and daily life, and just accept that everything changes, then we will be better able to deal with the eventual changes along the way. A great quote and idea to meditate on!
Why do we need complete detachment. We have come into this world and we can always enjoy the bright side of the things and feel gloomy at other times. We are not saints and we do not have any reason to get detached do we?
How can detachment be relative??? Means you're sometimes attached and sometimes detached to your convenience??? Even for commoners, a saintly attitude is most befitting!!! Because who wants to be a monster and be PRoud of it??? Not being saints doesn't allow certain behavior. If you extend this logic, then you should just give in to destiny like animals and endure everything, and not use your brains and flourish!!!
Happiness and sadness are two sides of the same coin. It is said if you do not know what is sufferings /sadness then you will understand what is happiness/joy. Both co-exists. So both are part and parcel of one's life. Why should one try to detach one from the other when one can not understand one without the other. So it is better to have both accept both. When one take life as it comes by one can enjoy life better. If do not eat then you will know what is hunger and the the joy of having food. The same goes with happiness and sadness. The process of both are required for better understand of life.
If we detach ourself then it will be difficult to live life. We all have some or the other objective to lead live and ultimately all want happiness )irrespective of materailistic or spritiual). At times we find happiness in buying some good electronic gadget and sometimes helping the needy person gives immense pleasure n its all natural so why to be detach

Balance of our response to happiness and sadness will create equilibrium, though it is not possible to remain detached unless we are saints.
