Now-a-days we are hearing lot about "concierge medicine", what is this medicine is all about, how it works?
Concierge medicine (politically correct term is "Direct Care"), is a term used to describe a relationship with a primary care physician, in which the patient pays an annual fee or retainer. This may or may not be in addition to other charges. In exchange for the retainer, doctors provide enhanced care. Concierge physicians care for fewer patients than in a conventional practice. All these physicians generally claim to be accessible via cell phone or email at any time of day or night. Their annual fees vary widely, from Rs.5,000 to Rs.6,50,000 per year for an individual.
Developing trends in Health care is concierge medicine, It is also known as "boutique medicine", and some concierge physicians offer their services as "executive health plans", in other words, health care for the patient who has plenty of money, but not a lot of time to wade through the bureaucracy of the health care system.
In the past decade, physicians must work harder and see more patients daily just to earn a decent living. It has become increasingly difficult for private practice physicians to cover skyrocketing overhead expenses such as soaring malpractice insurance and other costs of owning a practice. Medicine is a business. To turn a profit, doctors now must cram more patients into a day than ever before, which causes patients to feel more like cattle and less like individual human beings with real needs. Concierge medicine seems to address some of these issues for both patients and physicians, particularly those in primary care such as family practitioners or internists.
