Kvaerner cementation india ltd way back in 1998 built a horseshoe type water tunnel for Krishna Valley Development corporation using boomer drillrigs on 4 faces . The c/s was 30 m arched and unsupported. The length of tunnel was 17 km. Atlas copco is into building of tunneling equipments around the world
Dear Anshuman,
Two main way to tunnel are:
TBM Tunnelling: use of tunnel boring machines, open shields, EPB, Slurry, Hard Rock & Mixed shields.
Non TBM Tunnelling: Road Header, Drill and Blast, NATM
Method you want to choose depends on , geology, length of the tunnel and time allowed for construction.

In many cases we still use conventional drill and blast method. Only in recent years industry has started New Austrian Tunnelling Method & started using equipments like drifters with auto-feed and hydro booms for tunnel construction.....
