Power generation itself is a mangled web of entry barriers; high capital investment; extensive clearances and fear of litigation.

Usually, as part of entrepreneurship learning, we call a problem an opportunity.  We have in India such a large power problem but it is yet not a sustainable opportunity except for a few.

My client is working on an interesting model.  He wants to first set up a power company with a refurbished DG (10 MW) power plant.  To not worry at this stage about clearances, he wants to set it up on BOOT basis as a captive power plant at a power starved industry.  He is therefore setting it up at a lower cost and fairly quickly.  The business model has quick revenue generation capability.

His earnings, he wants to plough back on sustainable energy projects.  He wants to also attract investments at the present proposal as also on sustainable energy project proposals.

In this model, being a person who can not hope to start a power project because of the entry barriers, he is making an entry.  His present proposal may not be environment friendly but in the long run, he wants to be so.  Why not?!!

Power Sector in India shall have to depend on coal from all strategic angles. We have one sixth of coal reserves of the world but our coal quality available for power generation is very poor with high ash & low CV. But we are fortunate to have low Sulphur coals. For eco-friendly & sustainable power generation, we must adopt high efficiency Supercritical Boilers and harness advanced technologies such as Fluidized Bed Boilers & IGCC for power generation. We must supplement & blend our poor quality coals with low ash imported coals but having low Sulphur contents. .

Hi All,

To my mind I dont see any major development towards sustainable solution to energy / environment. All the practices implemented / planned to implement does not consider these parameter in accounts. However everybody is working towards individual profit and not working towards the benifits of large mass.

THIS NEEDS TO BE CHANGED OTHERWISE WE WILL AT A POINT OF NO RETURN.

Dear Sham Sunder.

Thanks for your post. I suggest to use the GEET technology to make the project environment friendly. Implementation of this technology will not only save the environment but also the fuel. But one has to do some research for making a customized system.

You may contact me for any further information on this technology.

Regards

India is rising and needs more power day by day......

Definitely to meet those demands and ensure reliable energy supply, there is a need for sustainable energy. Apart from getting power to where it's needed, how to use renewable energy sources intelligently is also important. Not only do large amounts of energy need to be transported to megacities, but once it arrives there, the energy also has to be distributed safely and efficiently.

Dear Anup....lot of things need to be taken care such that issue of sustainability is solved while power transporting & distributing. You & Makrand have provided some nice references too. I am seeing the trend of Algal biofuels which is one such option for us to explore.........
