Development of an employee is an ongoing process which continues well beyond training.

Although employee training and employee development are similar in the methods used to affect learning, their time frames differ.
Training is more present-day oriented; its focus is on individuals’ current jobs, enhancing those specific skills and abilities to immediately perform their jobs.

Employee development, on the other hand, generally focuses on future jobs in the organization. As your job and career progress, new skills and abilities will be required. As you are groomed for positions of greater responsibility, employee development efforts can help prepare you for that day.

The focus of development process is the person himself where the focus of training is the organization. Development concerns with making the employee efficient enough to handle critical situations in future. So while training concentrates on short term needs of the organization, development looks after long term goals of the organization.

Irrespective of whether we are involved in employee training or employee development, the same outcome is required. That is, we are attempting to help individuals learn. Learning is critical to everyone’s success, and it’s something that will be with us throughout our working lives.

What is HR in an organisation? HUMAN RESOURCE is an Asset of any organisation. Like financial capital, if you don't know how to harness the potential of Human Resources, the organisation is bound to fail! Training and Development are the integral part of HR, where is the doubt there? Without them, how do you expect to achieve the objectives?

Both are inter-dependent. Without training there is no development. Without development there is no training. In a family dispute, I told all my elder brothers (I am the youngest of 6 brothers), that we are independent, but inter-dependent.  That closed many a issuea.

While training merely imparts skills and gives practice, development is a much broader concept that involves growth. One can graduate trained from a school with no conscience, an unformed philosophy of life and no career plan. That requires "development." The first three prior posters who recognized the superior importance of long-term development over short-term training had it right. Even college graduates frequently need some retraining for practical businses applications; but all trained personnel need development, and schools have never been able to do that. Development still remains the mutual responsibility of the employer and the employee.
