Not exactly. It depends upon your company and to your boss to a great extent.
If you are working in a very heirarchial organisation with a lot of stiff upper lips in between you and the top man, then your work station definitely needs to send out a strong and positive signal. Whereas if you are a true professional, your work station should not impact either your work or your position in the company.
It is your work and role that should send out a statement on your position. A good manager can be equally effective working from a table and a chair in the centre of the office as from a closed cabin.
In fact todays trend is towards open offices with just a cabin for the top man on that floor. This is more pertinent since in most offices visitors are seldom allowed in the inner sanctum as they are met by the respective people outside in the conference or meeting rooms.
