Is it just an idea that leads to important or breakthrough concepts or is a clear need that leads the stake holders to pursue innovation?
It is need based. It has to do with where the company is placed in the given scenario. Where is the company going with the current product bouquet and also where is the brand placed vis a vis local and global market!! Innovation will be thought of only when there is a sharp recognition of the fact that the brand can do 'more'. Thats the need. The need to do 'more'; the need to let the brand communicte 'more' and the need of the brand to be different from the crop in the market and stand out!!
The thought of going a different route has to stem from the hard results of the above questions!!
Attitude is the mother of invention/innovation.Several people feel the same need but not all of them innovate. It is those with an attitude to alter status quo/bring betterment that step further to solve the problem and bring about innovation. Necessity may be a trigger but not always the cause for innovation.
I absolutely agree that Innovation stems from NEED but the question is whose? Is the need "external" like market driven or is it an "internal" need like need to achieve, to prove. If you think about it, Innovation will always be internal need driven. It's Invention that's external need based. Most of the time we confuse innovation and invention. Innovation comes from the need to do the same thing differently rather than to do a different thing algother. It is stimulated with the need to create an edge over others, the need to succeed, the need to achieve and the need to value add.

There are various reasons why we need innovation...
- For business survival
- For better returns
- To take advantage of opportunity
- Desire for higher business revenues
- For competitive advantage
These are all the need of the organisation to bring in innovation....
Yes Innovation begins with need
Ultimately there must be a need for an innovation to take hold, but many innovations have been stumbled upon, or realized inadvertently, before a need was actually established. Think tanks, labs, and research centers routinely make new discoveries that may "sit on the shelf" for a long time until a need, and a practical, economical application, is determined. For instance, many energy "innovations" are in the developmental stage - waiting for new discoveries to make them practical.
