The importance is given to money rather than talent now a days by most of our colleagues, friends and parents too..
Mr. Daniel. Your concern is very obvious and echoes the concerns of Nandan Nilekani, who raised certain pertinent issues, such as India's Demographic Dividend" in his book "Imagining India". A portion of his concerns are reproduced for your information: "India’s human capital is fast emerging as the key source of its economic growth; however, the country’s outlook on its population was not always so rosy. In the seventies, following international pressure and models that forecasted huge and economically damaging population growth, an attempt was made to control this growth through the Nasbandi program initiated by Indira Gandhi’s son, Sanjay. However, the electoral defeat handed to Indira’s government in 1977 discouraged any further attempts to control population through coercion in India. This led to a demographic dividend, giving rise to a large bubble of working age people. The consequent increase in the number of young workers is leading to higher savings, higher investment and consequently a higher growth rate." In essence, someone pointed out, the demographic dividend can be beneficial only if leadership exists to provide avenues for youth. An antiquated and self serving political class and an educational system that is devoid of intellectual leadership will inhibit growth. Today’s role models are also those who have succeed for their own ends and material gains. Only qualities of role models that are extolled are their ability to create wealth and global recognition and not the contribution to social transformation.
Everything in this world depends on demand and supply. If a particular talent is in more supply, the remuneration for that talent will be very less. This will explain why some jobs are highly paid and the others are paid comparatively less - even between jobs requiring the same level of IQ.
And this is the reason for majority of the students to choose a particular line of study. They see which areas are in demand at that time and choose that discipline.
If a person who is already employed wants to progress in his career and / or earn more money, he works on adding to his talents by further studies.
Usually in economic theory that is seldom discussed there is a value proposition where, a laborer is awarded 1/8th of a cent for every 'mansecond of his labor' which accumulates for 8 hrs work day. This is homogeneous throughout the economy. India wage levels were so low for 50 years so was our economy stagnant in those days. In 89 we were only a 75bn dollar economy when the wages were low. When the wages were raised we moved to the 1trillion dollar club. Wage levels were not our economies problem for the decision makers for 50 years.
Value theories a re seldom discussed or taught in India or in business schools guide students to this. So we have a very inefficient currency management system. Values of products are never fixed then every economic policy lacks wisdom and understanding of the citizens plight. Now we are moving into free market and possibly we might see changes for better. Then now I read we have stopped ciruculating lower denominational coins. This is a signal that we are not interested in value theory at all which can be disastrous for the economy in the coming times.
Thanx All for sharing your views...Special Thanx to Mr. Muralidharan who explained this in a proper economic terms..I appreciate sir..
But in addition to this, don't you think that it is a discouraging act for all those folks who have not got the opportunity of showing their talent and is being disgraced often by their parents, colleagues and friends??
The term "talent" in this age only means the ability to earn more and more money, by hook or by crook (but without breaking the laws of the land).
For example, a marketing professional who can sell a third grade product to the customers, by his sweet talk is "talented".
A software professional who can burn away his youth in writing code for the "gambling games" of his customer is "talented".
In other words, the more one can exploit others to get monetary results, the more one is considered talented. This is a perversion in this age, for which all of us will be paying a heavy price.
True talent involves character, helping the people and society lead a peaceful and prosperous life and of course, spiritual development and maturity.
